6 SLR freebore ???

Ok, a friend has decided to build a 6SLR Varmint/target rifle. He’s got a bighorn SA, Brux 8 twist barrel, can finish up to 27”. Was wondering about freebore and neck dimensions? He wants to be able to shoot 70-108gr pills if he can. Where to get dies also. All help appreciated

Mine is a .134 but after a lot of reading it seams the sweet spot is around .100 for the heavies. Whidden mades great dies

OKyote;

Robert Whitley designed the 6SLR and has a lot of good information on his website 6mmAR.com

He sells dies there also

Regards

GWY

Thx guys, he also wants to use Lapua brass so will probably have to inside neck ream them but what bushing sizes should work?
Probably be going with Whidden dies.
One more ??, will a Hornady universal 6mm bullet seater work?
TIA, Mark

70 to 107 is a lot of difference in length for a 6mm bullet. What is the main objective? Which will he shoot more because there isn't a freebore that is going to be ideal for both.

I'm not sure where the sweet spot would be for the 70. Mine is a .075, it's shorter than it should be for the 107s but it is still above the doughnut and shoots well. I wouldn't go any shorter than that, and it's probably about the right spot for the 70-95s

I had run the SLR for shooting NRA XTC shooting while out in Cali for two years. That particular game requires shooting a variety of bullet designs by nature so I shot and Practices with just about every light weight bullet combo you can think of at 200 and 300yds. 70gr Seirra Match Kings, 85gr Game Kings, 60gr Game Kings, 87gr Hornady BTHP, 95gr SMK's, 95gr Berger VLD, 107 SMK, 105 VLD Berger, and 105 Hybrids at 1000yds when I used it for that. Good News is that the little Blunt nose light weight bullets LOVE to Jump and can tolerate a very large leap if you will to the lands and still shoot little groups. My Reamer is a .128 Freebore which could be a little shorter with no issues. Say in that .100 to .110 area and still keep ahead of the donut that your going to get with the Lapua Brass. Good thing the SLR has a long neck../. as it will allow you to seat bullets ahead of that donut, that for me ( not sure if others found this or not.. Please chime in if it did) was found, that after cutting out the donut it comes back after a couple firings... so you have to keep cutting it out as brass slowly migrates up into the Neck junction. ( anyone else see that also?)
Any way just what I observed for the life of that barrel. Best of luck to you.

My buddy talked to the 6mmar guys and has settled on the SLR/S reamer. It has 0.075" freebore and should work for up to 108's. The hornady 105 will be the tightest! I think he'll still be able to shoot the 70's with a little jump but with the long neck will still work well. I'll report back when he gets going He's got the barrel and the reamer should arrive today

I have one of those reamers and I had to throat mine .045 more to load the 110 SMK pills in front of the donut.
Thanks,

Lloyd

I agree... one of my 243's has a 0.075" freebore and it's not enough for the heavy's. 0.090" will work but 0.100-0.110" will be best.

We decided on the 0.100 fb after talking to Robert Whitely. Should work fine for up to 108’s. The 105 vid/eld’s will be seated the deepest. Just past NS junction. Thx for the replies. I’ll let everyone know how it works!
