6 SAUM

Have a Winchester action completly redone. Set up for the WSM platform. My Question Has anyone done a 6 SAUM with an action set up for the WSM bolt face. As you can see I am new to the game of building rifles. Am no Gunsmith, not even minor skills. I send everything out to be done. was going with a 270 WSM, but someone mentioned the 6 SAUM and it has my interest as I have quite a few rifles. I hunted with a 243 Win for years, not because of the recoil just like the caliber, and when someone suggested the SAUM it struck a idea. I want a 6MM for bean field shooting but with more paazass than the 243. I have been using my 6.5-284 as well as my 6-284. But lookuing to something else before I depart. Any pros and cons will be greatly appreciated. The person who told me of this caliber I hold in high regard very knowledable man. Thanks Lou

The 6x284 was a bad enough barrel burner I can only imagine how short life would be with a 6x SAUM chamber... The 6mm Ackley in a 8 twist is about the best all around 6mm on the planet for what you want a 6mm for..............

+1. you are going to be ordering more barrels and doing more load development then enjoying shooting a really great load. 600-800 round barrel life? plus, the brass for that round is slim pickens--R-P, not the best.

A few British F-Class shooters have tried the 6WSM which isn't too different. Getting really good accuracy is tricky - probably because the bullets are over-stressed if you use the full capacity of the short magnum case. Barrel life IS short, as Cole and Preacher have suggested - 500-600 rounds if you stoke it up. Remember too that when someone says 'barrel life of x rounds', that x = total collapse usually, while the barrel is over the hill and on the downslope usually at half to two-thirds of the total life round count. That's OK for some purposes but not for 1,000yd F-Class where you need a half-MOA grouping capability. The only good thing I can say is that the barrel life isn't that much worse than the really heavily stoked up 7WSMs that rule F-Open here.

Hey Lou,

I think the 6mm SAUM would be too much also. I had problems with a .243AI blowing up bullets. turned out to be the barrel, but I would say the SAUM would be even more picky.

I would look into a 7mm SAUM. with a 28 to 30" barrel you can get the 180's to 3000fps which would be a good velo and have a flat trajectory and some energy also.

Did you get the action yet?

ourway77,

I would go with the WSM for the better brass. I have seen a 6 M4, a 7mm mag neck down to 6mm. It took Barnes bullets (100 gr at 4000 f/s) to hold together, and barrel life is about 700 rounds. It would take 100 to 200 rounds to work up a load, then how many deer can you kill.

I use one strictly for hunting using Barnes 80grn TTSX and 85 TSX bullets (don't have to worry bout blowin them up ;) ) Wouldn't use it for anything but hunting unless you like buying barrels.... ;D

Have a slightly smaller than varmint weight 26" 8 twist barrel on a Savage action. Just killed a nice little 8 pointer with it around 350 yrds bout a month ago.

Decent accuracy too.....5/8" or so 3 shot groups.

Agree with the others here....it WILL burn out a barrel FAST.

I agree with some of the above...the 6.5 and 6 X 284 are hard enough on barrels, I can't imagine that that little fat case would help things at all.. I would bet she'd clean the rifling out in short order.. it's just too much case for such a little bore....
