6 mm ppc/6mm br

given a 60 to 68 grain bullet out of a 24 in br barrel what do you think the kill range would be on groundhogs?
I may be getting a used br rifle in one or the other depending on cost.i got a hv in 22 br now but I thought of buing another rifle to replace a 6 mm ppc I had years ago.i still have all the dies and bullets for the ppc.the other ? is what velocities are you getting out of ether of these cases?
gary b,

I'd say PPC, since u have the stuff. Benchmark and a 65 vmax or 70 Btip should get you in the 3150-3350 slot. I'd say they are "killable" at 600.... hits way beyond that but recovery becomes an issue.

I shoot a PPC OR it's ugly cousin the 6 WOA most of the year and 600 is about all you've got on small to medium varmints.... Reliably anyway. You did say kill range not hit range, if I recall.

I'd go with the extra horsepower of the BR. Given the choice of the PPC or the BR - I'd stick to your .22 BR before switching to the 6ppc. My favoritevarmint rifle used to be my SAko 6PPCusa. Then California banned lead in my neck of the woods. The 1-14" twist won't stabilize lead-free bullets so I had to change calibers. I won't spend the dough on a faster twist barrel for that or another PPC I have when the BR will already do the job. That aside - I'd choose the BR if given the choice and I had to purchase another barrel. Now I use .20 or .223 within 400 yards and 6br for the long shots. I've been thinking of going to what you are moving away from - the 22BR. Maybe we should just trade guns. Ha

For clean kills on GH and coyote size animals you should use the bullets labeled explosive expansion. Bullets labeled hunting or target don't expand well on small animals. The Sierra bullet labeled "Varmint" on the box is for large varmints (not sure what Sierra calls a large varmint). All the major bullet manufactures make a bullet called super explosive. Most of these bullets expand well at velocities down to around 2200 fps. I have not tried Noslers. I shoot 58 GR Hornady VMax, 65 GR Hornady VMax and the Sierra 70 GR HPBT Blitz King all shoot small groups in my 6BR 14 twist 26" Krieger barrel. The Sierra 70 GR BK shoots a little better than the other two. All around 1/4" groups. For powders I use 8208, Varget and RE-15. RE-15 clearly seems to give a little smaller round groups. All three give good velocity. Seating depth makes a big difference. I never seat into the rifling for lower pressure and I don't have to worry about sticking a bullet in the barrel if I eject a loaded round. I didn't like V133, H322 and a few others I forgot about. I love the 6BR, super accurate, long barrel life, light recoil, small powder charges compared to a 22-250.

Typical velocities]without signs of pressure. A Rem 700 action. I don't push the limits.
58 GR Hornady VMax 3600 fps. I have shot 3650 without pressure. Compare this to a 22-250. Some guys are up to 3700 fps but I won't try it.
65 gr Bart's Ultra, 65 Hornady VMax, 68 Berger & 70 Gr Sierra 3350-3450 fps. I normally load to about 3350 fps.
