6 mm br

Hello,
I am a new member and I was referred to this sight by David at Shilen Barrels. I was at there swap meet this weekend and bought a select match barrel in 6br remington .270 neck 1/8 twist to fit a savage s.a. standard shaft. The reason for this post is that I have no experience with the 6br. What brass should I use? What is the difference between 6br remington, and 6br norma. It seems that there is conflicting information out there.
I appreciate any help given
Thanks

Welcome to the site.

I would recommend you go to the main page, www.6mmbr.com, and follow the link on the left side for 6BR. That link explains just about everything a beginner (and seasoned veteran also) would need to know about the 6BR.

After you have read the information there, then come back with whatever questions you may have.

The 6BR is a great choice (in my opinion ;) )

Welcome. I would recommend you read through the 6 BR cartridge section(s) in the Home Page on this site. A lot of your questions will be answered there along with pictures.

What you must do is call David at Shilen Barrels and ask if it was chambered for Remington brass or Lapua brass. If it was chambered for Remington brass you are going to have to use Remington brass. If it was chambered for Lapua brass you can use either one of the two makes. Lapua brass will not fit a Remington chamber.

That is good advice!

Hello,
I am also looking at getting a 6mmbr Norma from Savage. I was just wondering if Lapua is the same as Norma?

Thanks!

Siiri........what Savage model are you thinking of buying?

I am in touch with Sean at North Shore Barrels in Espanola for a 6BR Shilen Select Match 8 twist barrel and am interested in posts to this thread. Sean has a PT&G reamer for the 6BR. I assume it is for Lapua brass but I will confirm that with him. His reamer is throated for the 107 SMK.

Thanks for the help. I actually went to the 6mmbr sight before posting, and it was a bit confusing. It says to have your gunsmith chamber for the lapua brass. It is already chambered. I called David, and he didn't seem sure! he said probably remington brass. I went to midway usa, and when you pull up Lapua 6mmbr norma brass,
It says
Brass is headstamped 6MM Norma BR to meet European CIP requirements but the case dimensions are IDENTICAL to the 6mm BR Remington. This may cause confusion as some people understand the cartridge cases are different in dimensions. In fact it is the chamber dimensions, not the cartridge dimensions that changed. 6mm BR and 6mm BR Norma use the same case specifications however the difference between the two is the cartridge overall length specification with the BR Norma utilizing a longer heavier bullet.

In 1995 Norma adopted the 6mm BR and submitted a new "chamber" specification for certification by the European CIP board. The chamber specification differs from the North American SAAMI specifications in the throat dimension. This change in the chamber throat dimension does not affect or change the cartridge case dimensions in any way. Always make sure to use the correct ammunition in the firearm being shot.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this says that all the brass should be the same, but the newer chambering, ' 6 br norma' has a longer throat, for shooting 105 - 115 grain bullets. If this barrel isn't chambered for heavy bullets, Why the fast twist?

12 Bench Rest

Siiri..........take a look at the dedicated 6BR forum if you haven`t already done so. Good explanation of "old" paper box Lapua brass versus "new" plastic box brass.

I have 100 "old" cases so will need another conversation with Sean about his reamer concerning neck diameter.

But then I remember a post about Lapua bringing their "new" cases back to "old" standards but no specified date for the change.

Does a forum member know where the Savage 12 Bench Rest fits into this Lapua brass evolution?

Don't believe it. The base on Rem brass is smaller and Lapua brass will not fit a chamber made for Rem brass it.
Just had a reamer re-ground because it was made for Rem brass and my Lapua would not chamber. Cardboard box blue box not an issue.

All the Savage guns are chambered for the 6BR Norma. You would pretty much have to be into a custom chambered gun to run into a 6BR Remington

As far as I know Savage has chambered all theirs to CIP standards for 6BR Norma. I don't think any factory gun has been chambered for the 6BR Remington since the 40-X experiment many years ago.

The blue box vs cardboard box is a different issue having to do with neck diameter. It is all CIP 6BR Norma, but the cardboard box version may have pushed the max limit a bit. The issue with 6BR Norma vs 6BR Remington is neck length, not neck diameter.

The best explanation of it is in the intro to the Sierra load data for the 6BR Norma. The unfortunate part and adding to the confusion is that Remington changed their neck length in 1989, and continue to call the cartridge 6BR Remington. So there is an old Remington and a new Remington 6BR.

With that .270" neck just make sure you don't use the old Lapua cardboard box brass. Loaded rounds with this brass will not have enough clearance. Probably less than .0005" total.

I would bet it is a current run of no-turn chambers for the new blue box Lapua brass.
