6 mm br for ar-15?

hello, im new to this forum, so dont hate me if this question has been asked four hundred times. but.......... can the 6 mm br be loaded to an over all lenght,o.a.l.) of 2.250" so that it will fit inside the magazine of the ar-15? if so, dose anyone have one? please, do share, and thank you for inviting me to your forum. hope to learn alot, brian

It's been done. It's also not a good idea from a safety standpoint, as the bolt lugs are right on the edge for strength, bolt thrust from the cartridge approaches the strength of the lugs), and the AR-15 leaves more of the case unsupported than other rifle designs. The head and web on some BR cases is relatively thin - combined with high pressure loads, it's a recipe for a blowout.

The case head on a BR is bigger,.473" diameter) than the face of most AR bolts,7.62x39 bolt face diameter is .460"). Machining or EDM'ing the bolt face open leaves a sharp corner, which can cause cracking of the bolt at the lugs. If the bolt is case hardened, and I think it probably is), machining the face wider removes this hardened case in a fairly critical location.

One method of getting around the bolt face issue is to use a 7.62x39 bolt face, then lathe turn BR case rims to fit. However, if you have several hundred cases, this can become quite a bit of work.

The reasons above are why cases based on 6PPC and 6.8 SPC are becoming popular for use in AR-15s.

I hope this helps answer your questions.

Brian,

Robert Whitley has really worked this one out--he calls it the 6mmAR. Basically it's a 6.5 Grendel necked down to 6mm. But he's done more than create a wildcat--he's got a complete solution including dies, magazines, and uppers. He's invested a lot of money in getting the mags produced and he's invested a lot of time testing the loads to get max performance at pressures that the AR bolt can withstand safely.

There are also different size of bolt/bolt face that can be made to work. See http://www.dtechsuperstore.com
