6 Dasher varmint loads

I decided to do a varmint gun on the Dasher. Stiller Tac30 action Bartlein 1 in 12 barrel. Has any one tried this as a varmint round?

Hi

I will have my 6mmDasher varmint rifle very soon. Lawton 7500 dual port, Shehane ST-BR, Lawton barrel.

I went for a 8 twist so I can still shoot the 105/107's chasing the varmints out long or for competition shooting. I plan on running the 87Vmax at around the 3250fps.

It is my second Dasher, as after I had the first one built,L/R BR rifle) I could not go past it for a varmint rifle!

Cheers

Years ago, I chambered a cartridge that is a clone of a 6 Dasher which was a 6 BR Long recommended to me by Jim Williams. The 6 BR long is the 243 AI reamer with 40* shoulder ran in 0.100 longer than the 6 BR go gage. I shot out two Pac Nor barrels with this reamer. I shot several different loads, but my main stay for the p. dog shoot'en was 38.5g of H335 with the 60's at 3850 fps. This load was good to 400 yards and really turned p. dogs inside out.If you want to try some real screamers, the 60's with about 38.0-38.5g of H335. I got about 6000 rounds of extreme accuracy out of this load, but the reamer did have zero freebore.

I shot a lot of zero's with this cartridge with the 60's at 3850 when the barrels were new with the bullets jamed 0.030 into the lands. I always felt as it this load would really kick some serious butt in a Registered BR match, but I had quit shooting competition by then.

I quit shooting the 6 BR long due to the fact that Rem BR brass was junk and the primer pockets would not hold up to the pressures that this cartridge liked to be accurate at.

I shot 35.5g of H335 with my 70g low drags and at 3550 fps, they were unreal accurate, but not match winning accurate like the 60's at 3850. I shot a lot of groups that were so small with the 60's that I had to put them under a microscope to measure them, smallest was .030.

I would highly recommend the use of THICK cup primers for your round. 7 1/2's can not be had these days, so you are limited to a CCI-BR-4 or a CCI-450. I have gotten excellent accuracy with both of these primers.

Please work up to the loads that I have posted.

Good luck and let us know what loads you come up with! I feel an order for a Dasher Reamer Coming on!

My first 6 Dasher was a 24" 14 twist short throat Hart barreled Rem 700, built as a more efficient replacement for my then favorite prairie dog round, the 220 Swift. A terrific "hang time" prairie dog round.

My Dasher dog load is 37.0 gr. of AA2230 launching a 55 Nozler Ballistic tip @ 4002 fps. 200 fps faster than the swift with a 55 grain load using 7 grains less powder. The Lapua brass lasts forever and like Keith said as a varmint round the 6 Dasher's accuracy is outstanding.

Keep us posted on your results.

Donovan; I would fireform with 34 gr. in any action with an ejector hole or cutout to prevent any possible brass flow into the ejector opening. With a smooth faced bolt you may get by. No reason to wreck your new brass.

The Berger VLD's should work just fine for deer, let me know how it works out.

My fire- form barrel is an old 21" 6 ppc Hart 14 twist re-chambered to 6 Dasher, nicknamed "stubby".
Fire-form load is 32.5 gr. VV-133 with moly plated 55gr. Noslers @ 3550 fps.
2000+ rds. on P.D.s proves it's worth.
Go to load is 35.5 gr, same powder & bullet, in 2 other 14 twist Rock Creek barreled 700's. 3970 in one, 3995 in the other. Even "stubby" does 3800 with this load.
Any bigger on bullet size and you'll have to slow the powder down.

Donovan,
I don't have any other fire-form loads for you. I used 133 because I had two 44lb. kegs. One down, one to go.
I tried W-W 748 with 70 gr. moly Noslers. Shot real well with 38.4 gr. 3620 fps.
If you have any of the old AA-2230-C powder,,or, according to Accurate, same burn rate as 2460) I played with Sierra moly 70 gr. Bltzkings and ran them to 3640 fps, but the accuracy was at 36.2 gr. and 3530 fps.
I prefer 14 twists & light bullets for prairie dogs,
quick twist & big bullets for paper.
Never done any work with "tweeners"
Remember, only trust your own loads.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replys. This gun is on Gary Elisio's tube gun kit. I have 58 65 75gr Vmax +70gr Ballistic tip. I will let you know what wins out.
