6 dasher varget compared to rl15

i am in the process of fireforming my first 100 6 dasher. i have one more batch of 30 to form, then i start load development.

i have a lot of varget. I've used it in my 308. but it seems that rl15 is the 'goto' powder for 6 dasher. i have about 1.5 lbs left over for when i used to use it with my 308 but i have not been able to find any lately.

so how does rl15 compare to varget? is there something thats better than varget if you cant get rl15?

im also interested in rl16 but apparently thats not out yet.

Jim, your barrel will tell you which one is best and in pretty short order. My Dasher prefers Varget as do most of the Dashers that compete at Williamsport. Some guys like Jim Ohara still prefer RL-15 and lord knows, he's done quite well with it. Interesting discussion last year at the World's, seems like in different parts of the country different powders perform better than others. Generally speaking the guys in the south seem to prefer RL-15, while the guys up here in the Northeast prefer Varget and yet a lot of the boys from out west, specifically Montana seem to go with H-4895 and all have had great results with what they have chosen. Since you have Varget, I would start with that and see what it shows you. Since I'm talking 1000yds, it's all about the vertical. Perhaps one of your shooting buddies would give you some RL-15 to try if Varget doesn't satisfy you. Powders that have proven to work very well in the Dasher are RL-15, Varget, H-4895, Norma 203B, N-540 as well as N-550. Hope the Varget works for you and makes your life a whole lot easier, good luck............Chuck Loebsack.......Chuckhunter

Mine will shoot very well using both powders. Use what you can get because they both win. I can drive a little faster with the R15 with less pressure. Right now, I'm using Varget close to case fill with CCI450's. The SD/ES numbers are single digits with 5 shot groups going into a dime at 200 yards. The Varget is also much cleaner burning and I appreciate that! I shoot hBN coated bullets with an average velocity of around 3100fps.

I have 2 one likes varget the outher rl15 try both.

Good advice. I am in the process of dialing in my new Dasher. My BRX loves RL15. I don't know what the Dasher will lean towards, but I fireformed 100 rounds with Varget and it looked promising. Even if I achieve good results with Varget, I am going to try RL15 just to see.

I've had five Dasher barrels. Two preferred Varget and three RL15.

I'd recommend trying both. My previous Brux loved Varget and this one does better with RL15.
In either powder, CCI450s light the fire.

We have found through years of testing with at least 20 barrels and thousands of rounds that Varget preferred BR4 primers. Now this is for 1000 yard BR and all testing was done at 1000. If you read Chuckhunters post, I totally agree with what he said. I have observed the same thing. It seems to be an area thing. Maybe a monkey see monkey do thing. But I know we tested all of them extensively at Williamsport and almost every shooter has come back to Varget. Matt

I've tried and wanted RL15 to work but in 3 different dasher/brx barrels I couldn't get it to shoot as well as Varget. Other weird thing from others here is both dasher barrels prefered 205m primers over either of the cci's (450 or br) and the brx doesn't like them at all and 450's shot the best.

Another weird fact...all 3 liked the exact same powder charge but completely different seating depths and the brx barrel is about 25-50fps faster than the other 2.

Weird to me and just goes to prove that no barrel is the same and you just have to try different stuff.

You are VERY correct.... I have always said that "barrels are like women. When you climb into bed with them, THEY will tell YOU what they like! You can offer anything, but unless they like it, THEY don't work"!

thanks for the replies. i now have 100+ fireformed cases and will start load development in the next two weeks. thing shoots so well at 100yds with forming load i wonder if i will be able to tell any difference in loads at that distance and may do all my initial testing at 200 meters. i have access to a silhouette range thats marked off in meters instead of yards. normal load development in the past was done at 100yards. will start with varget. once i get that nailed down i will do some testing with rl15 that i have and see how they compare. if its better then i start monitoring the various vendors online.

Don't forget to monitor gunbot.com and ammoseek.com for when things become available live...

I'm not ashamed to admit...I never shoot 100y because I'm not confident or good enough to tell the difference. All my load development is either at 2 or 300 yards for the exact reason you mentioned.

First i would like to say RL- 15 and N203b are the same or so close you can't tell the difference. Varget is dirty and i ran it to over 3100 and didn't get any better and it didn't shoot as good as 15. H4895 is the second best powder i tried but built pressure fast with lower velocity. H4350 i could not get the vertical out, even with a 12" drop tube i couldn't get enough in to get rid of .2 vertical. RL -16 may just be the ticket but we will wait for it and see… jim

I've see a couple threads refering to RL-16 but haven't been able to find any info on it. Is there a source that references it?

I've also found H4895 to build pressure faster then Varget or 15.
