6 Dasher v.s. 6XC

Pros and cons of these 2 cartridges.....?? for long range and across the course use...

which is a better overall round and why.

Thanks

I will be the first to give my opinion. I am ready for the snowballs. I think they are pretty much the same ballistically out to 600 yds. I think the extra velocity give the XC an edge past 600. I do not know about the norma brass. I shoot a dasher and wouldn't give it up. The fireforming is a little work but, the fireforming loads shoot great just 75fps slower (as good accuracy as full power loads). On the plus side I personally think the lapua brass is better quality and durability than norma. I have been around several dashers and they always shoot and usually pretty similar loads. I can achive great accuracy from 2950-3050fps depending on weather and barrel with 105-108 bullets. The XC I believe, can push the same bullet 3100+. Disclaimer: I have never loaded or shot an XC just have a friend that shoots one.

Norma brass available for 6XC, no fireforming needed. Plenty of neck to work with as well. Very easy to find accurate loads, not finicky at all in my experience. Great feeding round from the magazine as well.

They are both excellent cartridges, but excellent for different applications. For XTC and Long Range, go with the 6XC - no contest from the Dasher - Dasher is in second place for that use. 6XC is ready made to feed well from normal 308 magazines for rapid fire sequences in XTC and has ready to go brass. 6XC has reasonable case capacity for running the 105-108's and the 115's. Tubb won Long Range Title this year at Perry using 6XC for non-Palma matches. Houle won the long range Mustin Trophy at Perry this year with 6XC and the 115's, Rodrigo Rosa used a 6XC for non-Palma matches to take third overall in the long range at Perry.

Personally for running the 115's I like a little more case capacity yet over the 6XC, but you cannot argue with the success the 6XC has had in XTC and Long Range. The Dasher does not have that in the highpower rifle disciplines, although it does have great pedigree in the bench rest disciplines for those distances, but they run much faster sequences in bench shooting (i.e. not typically so much subject to wide and changing wind conditions, since by the time a highpower shooter shoots one shot out of 20 for record and his target is marked, the bench shooter typically is done the full complement of 5 - 10 shots he is going to shoot for record). Dasher is great in a bench gun as it uses little powder and runs with faster burn rate powder like 32 - 34 gr of Varget or RL15 (vs 39 gr of H4350 for the XC) which makes for a very minimum recoil and muzzle blast which helps a bench gun stay put and not move around much.

Compare it to the 6X47, not dasher. They have similar loads. The 6X47 has a small primer, which I feel is more accurate.

What RCWIII's posted is spot on, and 6x47 indeed is very close to 6XC with regard to loading.

If you're really motivated by the potential using a small rifle primer has, one can make 6XC brass from Lapua's Palma brass with some effort.

I did just that earlier this past season, looking to learn whether such efforts might pay off in longer case life. Any increased accuracy obtained is lost in the noise my shooting capabilities impose however; I did learn that with my loading practices there's certainly nothing lost. Using Berger's 105VLD out to 1,200 yards it's an excellent cartridge for competition.

I have shot both, and my preference is the Dasher. Although the velocity of the Dasher is about 100 fps slower, the Dasher is more accurate (in my experience). Although I haven't shot 1000 yard matches, I have shot 600 many times and the Dasher is "KING" at that distance. I am now zipping up my fire suit....so, fire away. Good shooting....James

I have shot the Dasher with 115's to 1600 yd and one mile.
Hits are made on an 18" plate and a groundhog silhouette if
conditions permit me to see my hits in the dirt.

I have no experience with the 6 XC but I am thinking about
trying a 22-250 AI 40 degree opened to 6mm with the 115's.

All good stuff, keep it comming ! Im reading and taking it all in.

Thanks

Also note, this will be for a new Eliso R5 build. 6BR or BR improved (dasher) or 6XC for XTC, and Long range Comp.(1000)
