6 Dasher Norma with N160?

Has anyone tried a 6 Dasher (Norma or otherwise) with N160 and 105-115 class bullets. Thinking the barrel may go longer with a cooler flame temp then Varget, H4350 or RL16.

Plan is to shoot one rifle the entire season but if Varget/H4350 is going to cook the barrel in 1200-1500 rounds, that won't work. I have yet to burn up a Dasher, but have seen barre life numbers all over the place.

Hello Chris! I have started using N160 in a 6 Creed with 115 Berger VLDs. It is not A LOT slower than H4350, however, it is "noticeably" slower. The Dasher needs a rather long drop tube to get enough H4350 OR RL-16 in the case. I tried H4350 in one of my Dashers and with a very slow "drip" and a narrow 6" drop tube, I barely got 35.0grs in the Dasher. If that be the case, and it was in MY instance, you could NOT get enough N160 in the Dasher case to get to 2980-3000 f.p.s. In my 6 Creed I worked up to 42.6grs with the 115 DTAC and was getting right at 3070. With the Berger 115 VLD I could only muster 3040 before "bolt lift resistance" showed up. That is just about 1 gr MORE than a good stout load of H4350 in the Creed. I sincerely doubt you could get an additional grain in the Dasher to even equal what you are putting in with H4350 as a "max" load.. On the other hand, if you already have some N160 on hand, give it a shot! It can't hurt anything..

Ben,

I don't have any but we generally have pretty good powder access here. I have plenty of Varget and h4350 on hand, as well at 7-8# of rl16. I really don't want to mess with a drop tube. I'll probably stick with Varget if I need to voodoo powder into the case.

Right now, my daughter's 6Dasher is getting 3000fps with a 107. 32gr Varget. I can be happy with that and if I can get 2000 rounds from the barrel I'd be fine with that.

Chris

If you do not have N160, then forget it.. In my NOT SO HUMBLE opinion, the perfect burn rate is the "old" (as in now discontinued) IMR 4007! It was a tad bit faster than H4350, had TINY kernels and you could get good velocity out of it. I think if it was still in existence, you could go sailing past 3000 with A LOT less pressure than either Varget or RL-15 produces AND you could get it in the case! GREAT powder that NEVER should have been discontinued!

I load 36.6 of H4350
I have 3000 plus rounds down the bore
An with a 30 1/4 tube it shoots 3080
With QL pressure of62500
I get 95 % of of the bullet speed 16” down the barrel
Varget And other the 95% bullet speed it in 10”bf the barrel
I think it’s better to have the pressure and heat in 16 “ rather then 10”

How in the world do you get 36.6grs of H4350 in the case? I remember 35.0grs was slightly up in the neck area>>>and there 'taint much neck on a Dasher!

I started out with my 1st Dasher in 2004, and moved from Varget to N150. Over the years, it seems to me that N150 has gotten quite a bit faster - I used to be able to run just over 3000fps with 35grs of N150, but now, even 32.3grs of a later lot is about as far as I can push it, and I'm getting only 2918fps out of 105 Hybrids in a 28" Bartlein, with somewhat inconsistent accuracy. I tried N160, thinking its low flame temp would help extend bbl life, but accuracy was poor at 2873fps with 36.3grs, R7-1/2, and Berger 105 Hybrid. ES was also huge, at 88fps. I did find 24lbs of IMR 4007SSC a month or so ago, and tried some of it in this Dasher, which is a LR prone rifle built around a BAT 3L/30" Bartlein 1-8tw in a Robertson Composites H&H prone stock. 33.65grs produced 2886fps with a Wolf SMR primer in Lapua formed brass. I could go farther with 4007, but I was only a day or two out from our state mid-range champs, and just didn't have time to dink with it any further. Perhaps this winter I'll push it harder in a Bighorn TL-2 SA Dasher to see what accuracy's like...

You could also look at the 30 rem AR ... turn down the rim to .480 and resize neck to 6mm.... If you are good with brass use 284 Lapua to make them.

these have done very well using H4350 up.....
