6 dasher for medium game

deer hunting I would rather have the 6.5 100 NBT with the extra speed ,,I was getting 3350 from the 6.5 L 100 NBT load and under an inch at 300,,but my deer shots are inside 500 and most about half that

More speed???? The 105 6mm VLD launched at 3050 is going almost 200FPS FASTER at 500 yards than the 100 Grain 6.5 Ballistic tip launched at 3350.

So much for more speed.

Yepper...... but so many's ballistics studies end at muzzle velocity !.!.!

At 300 yards the starting 300-fps slower 105-VLD is already surpassing the faster Mv of the 100-BalTip does ballistically.
The 105-VLD having more speed past 300yds, it will retain more energy, hence: more wallop / knock-down.
At 500yds, around 1100-ft.lbs of energy (compared to 880-ft.lbs) which is more then a 44-Magnum has point blank, and almost double then a 357-Magnum.

I own both 243 & 6 Dasher, both built by Dan Dowling.

The 243, I've deer-Prairie dogged-coyote hunted with for over 35 years. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the caliber. It has a 30+ yr old 27 1/2" 1-12 turn Schneider tube on that still holds under 1/2" @ 100 yds. After several thousand rounds, it's favorite load is the sierra 85 HPBT at 3225 fps with ammo loaded on a Dillon 550.

The 10 year old Dasher is a no turn chamber, 27" Hart 1-10 twist. It does 5/8'' @ 335 yards, but I'm loading it with Wilson dies. I had it throated for the 87 VMAX's when I had it built as a live varmint rig. It does 3197-3210 fps with RE15.

If I had it to do all over I wouldn't own a 243. What would be the point? Based on real life chronographing the accuracy/velocity sweet spot is identical and the accuracy is better with the Dasher than the 243 ever gave me when it was new, and it does it with over 10 grains less powder. If I was building another deer rifle in a 6mm, it would be a Dasher.

BC of .532 on the 6mm 105 VLD vs the .350 on the 6.5 100 grn nosler would be one key reason. And for two, if I was building a 6.5mm then it would be to shoot the 130-140 grain bullets at a higher velocity than the 6.5x47 can drive them, therefore I would have done a 6.5x284. But that was impractical for the purpose of my rifle.

where I hunt deer I would rather have the 6.5 100 NBT as the 6 105 VLD,,as about 300 yards is a long shot in the woods where I hunt,,if I was going to be going somewhere a 500 yard shot on deer is possible I could load the 129 LRAccubond with a .561 BC at 2900 fps pretty easy that would be getting 270 Win type horsepower,,and still fit in a Rem Model 7 mag box or AICS 308 mags, with the Dasher the 105 VLD is as good as you can get ,the 6.5x47 can step up 2-3 times from the 100 NBT

the Dashers and BRDX and 243 are really good calibers but for deer hunting I would take a 6.5 anything over a 6 anything,,but really where I hunt I would rather have a 35 Rem or 444 Marlin as either.
