6 Dasher build sheet...

Phil

Gold $$ Contributor
I`m having a Dasher built and am going over the options on the action.

Please tell me if i`ve forgotten something..

Bat "MB" 1.53" Round
RB/LP
.308/PPC bolt face
Recoil lug
Diamond fluting
Roller cocking piece

Anything missing?????

Make sure you specify that it's for a BR/Dasher. If it's going to have an ejector, it needs to have a Sako extractor and an angled top on the ejection side of the action.

Will do...Thanks Alf.

Maybe not "missing" but I wonder if you "need" everything on your list. I have the same action for the same cartridge minus the roller cocking arm and recoil lug with no ejector and it works just fine. My approach is generally to keep things as simple as possible.

I would like to know what the roller cocking arm benefits? Also would like to know what would be the going price to have something like this custom built? Just curious.

I believe that "cocking arm" should be cocking piece, the part on the end of the firing pin that contacts the cocking cam. As far as I am aware, no one makes these as a custom modification. Their purpose is to reduce the amount of effort it takes to raise the bolt handle when cocking the striker spring. I have been told by one manufacturer that the reduction in bolt lift, for his actions, is about a pound.

Halfmoanut,

I believe that the roller option comes standard on the 3 lug actions???

BoydAllen,

You are probably correct,i just couldn`t remember what they called it. ;D

DaveBerg,

I`m not going to be making any weight with this gun...and Joel Russo will inlet for the "MB".

Thanks for the thoughts though, that`s exactly what i`m looking for.

Phil.

Pictures of the roller cocking piece here.......http://riflemansjournal.blogspot.com/2009/08/bat-three-lug-action-by-german.html

MB is not a 3 lug so I think we are confusing actions here.

No.....Not confused, just the only pictures i could find of the roller.

The roller cocking piece is available as an option on actions other than the 3 lug....

While we typically don't build a gun with the idea that we're gonna sell it, I'd still consider building it as a 17 pound light gun. It would open up the customer base in the event you want/need to peddle it.

I have question, why a 3 lug? Most of the BR shooters i know sent them down the road and went back to the two lug. the second thing, if it is a single shot action it has two recoil lugs already why would you add a third?.......jim

First of all, I think that you are referring to locking lugs. As to the reason for three, there is some research that indicates that having lug contact more dvenly distributed around the case head can be an advantage if brass is not of the best quality and sizing is more than minimal. There is also the advantage of less bolt rotation, which carries with it the disadvantage of less mechanical advantage for cocking the striker spring. This issue is reduced by the use of a roller type cocking piece. In short range benchrest, the brass is of high quality, and sized minimally, so the advantages of a three lug may not outweigh the higher bolt lift effort. On the other hand, this issue does not seem to encumber some very high ranking shooters that use them. The short answer is that in the overall scheme of things, two lugs or three is much less important than many other factors.

As far as I know there is not a ".308/PPC bolt face" as the two are different and usually you would buy two different bolts for those two different sizes. For a Dasher you want the ".308" bolt face (i.e. .473") and not a "PPC" bolt face..

Robert,
How's it goin' :D On the bolt face thing, in the wonderful world of single shot bolt rifles, many PPC are built on BR/.308 bolt faces, and they work fine. The only issue to worry about is if you are using an ejector. Of course I would always suggest confirming this with the action manufacturer.

I guess that must be unique to some action makers and not others as I have some single shots without ejectors but I have different bolts for them because the extractor will not hold the smaller diameter case properly using the bigger bolt face.

Robert

Kelbly benchrest actions, Stiller benchrest actions, Bat actions, (and probably some others that I cannot think of right now) allow the use of a ppc on a BR bolt face, at least when an ejector is not used, and in some cases even with an ejector. Even the lowly Savage will do it with a longer sliding plate extractor that Fred Moreo offers. I shoot a Viper (Stiller) chambered in 6PPC that has a .308 sized bolt face. 'Never had a problem.

Forgive the admittedly ignorant question, but why is a Sako style extractor and the angled top a requirement?
