6 Dasher barrel question....

Phil

Gold $$ Contributor
I`m going to be ordering a barrel for a 6 Dasher project...

Hoping to sling 87gr V max bullets at prarie dogs with this one.

I know what twist and manufacturer i`m going to be using, the only thing i`m unsure of is what barrel length i should be getting.........

This will be a shoot from the bench gun only so i`m thinking 28" on the short side and 30" on the long side...

What say you.......How long should i go??????

Phil.

Long barrels create higher velocities and less wind resistance, but the sine waves (i.e. barrel whip) are higher, so that better accuracy will be with a shorter barrel. I am not saying a 28 or 30 inch barrel won't shoot well, cause each barrel has its own idiosyncries. Short range BR shooters prefer stiff barrels 20 - 24". Some shoot well, others do not. What twist do you want and with a turn or no-turn neck?

I REALLY want to try a 12 twist, but i`ll probably go with a 10 just to make sure the 87 will stabilize....

I also turn necks to .012 so it`ll be a .267 loaded neck.

I did just locate the 6br barrel length write up and it says that there is an average of 8fps. gain per inch of barrel over 28".

I`m not sure it`s worth the extra to get 2" more barrel length?????????

I personally would have wished I'd gone with the 30" barrel on my dasher for when I get it cut and rechambered I'd still have it a little long. But I have no complaints with my 28"

I've shot out 4 Dasher barrels over the past few years. They have ranged from 31-27 1/2"....My 27 1/2" that I'm shooting now, and a 28" have both been lazers! No doubt, I'll do every barrel from here on in 28"...The extra length just doesn't give you that much more in velocity..

Dont want to hyjack a post ,but Falcon how many rounds was on the shot out barrels? I have a couple of dashers ,one with about 1200 down it and still shooting under .25 moa out to 400 yards. Just wandering if I need to start thinking about anotier barrel.
Thanks

Terry,

I shoot F-Class mainly, and I shoot fast! So, I can say that the barrels get abused, especially in the summertime heat down here in the south. Each barrel has shot competitively at 1000 yards to 2200 rounds, with one going 2400 before they started throwing shots...

I have 5 barrels for the dashers and none quit so far 2 were set back both still will shoot in the one's @ 100 yds and will shoot in 5" 10 shot groups @ 1K. The Kreiger is very short 27" LV. and has over 2K down the tube, The Brux has 1500 and i hope it will go for a while. The difference in MV. from 27" to 30" with heavy bullets is less than 20FPS. I plan on going back to 28" from now on, it doesn't seem to be worth the extra money and the loss of balance.......jim

Jim what powder do you use ? I like your round count , but my dasher stopped grouping the way I want it to group at 600 rounds. It is now being set back and recrowned. I was useing R15 , but will be trying Varget when I get the rifle back. I could hold less thn 2" at 500 yards , but after shooting it all last summer my groups opened up to over 3" at 500. That wont win any matches. My best 500 yard group was 1.230" . John

John,

I've used RL 15 and Varget. Pretty much changed over to varget on account it seems a lot less temperature senitive. With Berger 108's, I shot for groups of 3" or less at 600 yards and was happy. Then I got the new Berger 105 Hybrids, and now if they are over 2", I'm doing something wrong. They will shoot between 1-2" pretty regularly if you are doing your part. Jump them .015, and watch your results. So far, I've only tested them a couple of times as I was looking for a load to shoot them at a recent Mid-Range Regional F-Class event. My first loads to test(jumping .015 with 32.9grs of varget) shot a 1.237" and a 1.574" at 600 yards..I called that good, loaded to that load, and then shoot them at the event...Over two days, I dropped only one point, and held an average of 2" of vertical all weekend.

Jim,

Very impressive! I'm gonna try some coated bullets next season and Varget. R15 for me is history , hate all the carbon. Thanks , John
