6 Dasher and IMR 4166 testing

To keep my and the other posters results seperated for time being. I made it to the range today to test some of the new IMR 4166 in my 6 Dasher with a Krieger 8.5 twist barrel using the Berger 108 BT

Atmosphere readings were

temp 46*
station Pressure 30.32
humidity 97%
Wind 2-3 mph

My loads started at 32.0 grains and went up .3 grains to give a bit finer tune on velocities and when I got to 33.2 I stepped up to 33.4 grains a .2 grain difference as I didn't know what to expect in pressures and played it safe.

Results are as follows

32.0 avg 2917 fps ES 19 group size 2.067
32.3 avg 2942 fps ES 12 group size 2.050
32.6 avg 2977 fps ES 14 group size 2.354
32.9 avg 2989 fps ES 9 group size 1.154
33.2 avg 3016 fps ES 7 group size 2.738
33.4 avg 3042 Fps ES 7 group size 2.047

These groups all were only 3 shots and shot at 500 yards.
I'll pick back up hopefully Saturday morning and test some more loads with increased powder charges up hopefully close to 34.0 grains if I can.

Targets are attached
Target #1 are loads 32.0 32.3, and 32.6 grains

Target #2 are 32.9, 33.2, and 33.4 grains

As you can see as the charge went up there was less verticle in the second target I'm hoping to find the next accuracy node some where around 3050-3060 fps

To give an example on this and Varget today I shot 3 different loads with a new lot of powder

And here are the results of those

32.3 avg 2953 ES 6 group 1.350
32.5 avg 2964 ES 5 group 1.191
32.7 avg 2978 ES 7 group 2.324

I hope these help those looking at this powder. I'm also going to test the 4166 with the Berger 105 VLD as well to give you guys some data for that bullet as well.

To add to this the cases all were fresh annealed and FL sized using a Harrel's sizing die.
Powder charges were +/- .01 grains from intended charge listed.

Thanks for the info. I just bought a lb to test in my BRX's in case Varget becomes harder to find. What primers were you using?

any further results/range reports with 4166?

Nothing yet,

The weather has been crappy here if the days are warm enough to show any sort of promising results the wind kicks in and just makes it not worth wasting powder.
Once I get a good break in the weather I'll get back out and do some further testing and may even try a test at a match in the near future.

I have heard IMR 4166 is a little more bulky than Varget, is that true?

Yes, that's what it appears to me. In my .308 loads; it seems to require lighter weight charges for the same apparent pressure. I 'm getting good accuracy from it.

It seems to be cleaner than Varget.

How high did you go on your powder charge with the powder? I'm waiting for temps to get back up where I like to shoot and try this powder some more.

I went to 33 but the groups at 100 opened up to about .350 and I didnt try to reach the next node and backed down to 32,,shooting in the ones at 100 and shot really well at 800,,

Ok shoot what the rifle likes. Hopefully soon our schedules mesh and we can meet and shoot together some time at the Dome
