6 BRA brass question

RICK SMITH

I have once fired 6BRA brass I'm wanting to turn the necks. I see that Whidden is about the only one that sells a non bushing full-length sizing die. How can I size the necks so that I can turn them without using the Whidden die. Any advice is much appreciated. I do have a short action customs 6br a modular sizing die, but it does not size the entire neck

I am merely tagging in here since I don’t know either, but I have a feeling a Forster 6 dasher FL die might work.

Lets see what the experts say. I want to know this also.

edit: a “trimmed” dasher die.

Not suggesting you do it, but I've turned brass that has been fired/sized like 6-7 times using only a bushing die. If I remember correctly I was taking it down to .012 from ~.014ish. You'll cut out the unsized portion, but it actually shot accurately, and the neck didn't rip off.

Not saying it's a best practice, but when I did it with a 6GT it worked fine for me.

Couldn’t you just use your expander mandrel after you have sized your brass. I’m assuming your concern is the small portion of neck that doesn’t get sized with a bushing die? I don’t think it will matter but you can check after you expand the necks to see if there is a noticeable step at the shoulder junction.

I just didn't want to cut the unsized portion to thin. With the SAC modular die there is about 30 to 40 thou of neck that ain't sized.

I have a Niel Jones bushing neck die that adjusts down to the shoulder. I have used it and then turned necks. It worked great. Problem is they don't give them away ether.

I guess my question is ... How do you know you need to neck-turn? Did you test on a Concentricity Gauge and get bad readings? Or did you measure with Ball Calipers? Or what?
