What was your velocity with the H4895? I have your Atterbury load with 107's at 2895-2900 fps. I assume that was also 30.6 of H4895?

This seems to be a slow lot of H4895.. I run 29.8 H4895 with Berger 105's and get 2890fps. You may want to dry that powder in a food dehydrator at 100 F for about 4 hours.


Edit to add - just read your post about a new lot ordered.. definitely drop back to 29.0-29.5 and work back up when you get it.

I definitely will! Thank you for the advice. I must have a pretty slow lot of H4895 or it's just degraded some over the last 20 years. I want to say this can of H4895 cane from an auction, it was sealed, but you never know how it was stored. My reloading room is in the house which is at 68-70 degrees year round. Still smelled and looked ok though when I cracked it open last year for a few test rounds out of my 223. But definitely seems to be slow because I'm not seeing anyone else using 31.8g of H4895 with a 108g bullet and still only getting 2950fps.

Well I just got back from testing the 2835-2880 area at 30.3/30.5/30.7/30.9 and nothing really jumped out at me...31.8 definitely shot the best by far today. 30.3 is showing potential also I think.

Yes! Now play with seating depth for the 30.3 load, in 0.003 increments.

I was thinking the SAME thing,,. he should try, the Newer "Pointed" 107 grain, SMK's,.. Lightly Jammed.
My 6 XC Prints those Babies, in ONE Hole from, the Low 2's to 3's ( No Paper, between Bullet Holes ).
My 1-7.5 twist also likes, the 108 gr Elite Hunters although, I haven't bothered to "Tune" them, yet,..
getting group's in the 3's is, NO big Deal.

I don't particularly NEED it to shoot 1 hole groups as it's not a BR rifle. It's for 1K steel and coyotes, so even if it only does 1/2 MOA 5 shot groups, that's still plenty good for the discipline for which it will be used.

I have some Barts 103 Daggers I'm going to try out of it, so we'll see what it's truly capable of. Some of you guys seem to think all 6 BRs will just shoot 1 hole with whatever you stick in it, sadly that has not been my case...

I don't think the ELDM's are going to give you the best groups. In benchrest, I don't know of anyone shooting those.

I’ve seen a time or two where I had to swap bullets or powder, but for the most part it’s been really easy.

I would clean it with an abrasive and shoot some groups 20 off the lands or farther. That bullet was designed to jump, and it’s shooting .2s in 6 ARC for my hunting buddy.

No I dont. But there's been absolutely no wind while shooting these either.

Again, this is not a BR comp rifle. If it was, I wouldn't be shooting ELDMs. I know ELDMs are still capable of 1/4 to 1/2 MOA however as I shoot them in all my other rifles with that type of accuracy and a tuned load.
