6 br with a brake, can you see impacts ?

I have a Savage bvss in 22-250 that I recently purchased. My plans are to take off the 22-250 barrel and put a 6 br barrel on so I have a 6br to shoot woodchucks with.

My question:
If I have a muzzle brake put on, would I possibly be able to see my impacts say, out past 300 yards ?
( i have a break on my bvss in .223 cal, that I can see hits with after 300 yards. Still too much muzzle jump at closer ranges though ).

Looking for folks that have a break on their 6br with experience.
Thank you

Can’t speak to your main question. I made that exact same swap, though, and it was a gift that kept on giving.

Little bastard brake and some others will turn the 6 BR into a bb gun. Contact Alex Wheeler.

55g nosler at 3900 is wicked accurate, flat shooting, wreaks havoc on chucks!

If your BFSS barrel is new, consider a good gunsmith turning it into a 22/250 AI, mine shot bug holes with a zero freebore chamber. Cut off about .400 off the back and re chamber. Here are groups shot with mine, and mine had around 500 rounds down the tube, shot in one afternoon.

Muzzle brake will definitely tame it and make it much easier to spot misses.

You should be able to spot impacts with .30 cals without brakes, if you apply the fundamentals properly. Work on getting straight behind the rifle and following through. But a muzzle brake on a 6br should turn it into a "bb gun" as another posted stated above.

I have a brake on my 6BR for prairie dogs. You can definitely see your hits even at closer range. With 90-95gr. bullets it can handle the wind and you can make shots with amazing accuracy out to 800 yards. 8 twist on mine. My experience with light bullets in the wind was not good and impact signature was non existent!

I had a 6/284 with a brake on it and was able to see hits. Can't see why you shouldn't be able to see hits with a 6br.

Seeing a hit depends a lot on whether you blink when
the rifle fires. I'm dead serious about this statement.
Either stand to the side of or watch a video of a known
GOOD shooter and watch their eyes, they NEVER
fluctuate. They have a deadpan stare. That person
will likely see their hits.
I cant help blinking w/a 22. LDS

Thank you all, fellas.
I will soon be asking for a used 6 br barrel , hopefully with a decent brake already on.

I'm not sure if you're going to have any luck with that. Most guys with a good 6br barrel don't tend to sell them.;)

Muzzle brake, shmuzzle brake. Get a 7" suppressor hanging on the end of that barrel and you will be able to see and hear your impacts. Most fun you'll ever have with a rifle in your hands.

Consider chambering to 6BRX. Same cost for chambering. Many gunsmiths don't have a zero or .030" 6BRX freebore reamer. I have a 14 twist a 12 twist would give a wider choice of bullets. Don't know if it would hurt accuracy with 55 & 58 gr bullets. Should be good for 70 to 85 gr.?

I got a brake on my 6BR. It's like shooting a ruger 10/22, no joking... Ive never shot targets with it yet, just hunted, so can say on bullet trace.. Its my wifes gun really..

How the rifle tracks has more to do with seeing the hit than any of the rest of the things. You need to parallel and when you pull it back it stays on the point of aim. When you can see the hit at a hundred you will know you are there....... Jim

Got a 6br i have been running the 110 SMK's with a ross schuler 3 port brake. My barrel is 21" so its a little loud but for spotting impacts, it does great. I am a big fan of Schuler's and muzzlebrakes and more brakes. At their cost point, they are hard to beat. Had a JP recoil eliminator on a 260 and have to say for spotting hits/misses it was hands down the best for staying on target. There is a write up precision rifle blog regarding the effectiveness of different brakes and its relationship to staying on target. I agree with NWnewguy, if you can afford one and can stand the wait, put a suppressor on it. I finally gave in and ordered one.

Yes you will be able to see hits. I have been shooting Savage LRPV with Criterion full bull barrel in 6BR with Witt machine brake for a few years on dogs and can watch all hits out at far as I can shoot. Makes a big difference. Would estimate I dont see 50% of the hits without brake.

I started seeing impacts closer in after I made a conscious decision to not blink when the shot breaks.

A side effect was my accuracy improved a bit too.

Nonetheless, a good brake helps but makes proper hearing protection all that more important!
