6 BR to 22 BR Queston

Just got some new Lapua 6 BR Norma and need to resize to 22 BR and trim necks. Gun has a .250 chanber. Question...........resize first and then trim or the opposite? Thanks

I am an idiot................I meant to say turn the necks instead of trim!!!! So....turn necks and resize or the the other way around? Thanks for your reply!

In my 30 br, I resize the neck, turn the neck, then trim to length. Once again, trim to length should be the last thing you do.

Turn the necks first when reducing the neck diameter. The bottom of the neck will move up into the case shoulder. I have a 22BR.

REad this first

Here ya go... Read this article.

It is not specific on tight neck chambers, but it clearly says to neck size, chamfer, then turn necks. The neck turning needs to a specific size according to your chamber. I use the old .001 to .0015 per side. So I your chamber is a .250, then I would turn my brass to .250 - .224 = .026 (divide by 2) = .013 then allow for clearance (.001 -.0015). If this was my gun, I would turn my necks to .0115 for the little extra clearance.

Simple process. And if this is a P-dog gun, I would most certianly try me some of those A-max's in it. Those things hit HARD!!!!!

My own recent experience teaches resize, turn necks, trim to length.

When I sized down 6BR cases that had .012" neck thickness and loaded them with Berger 52 gr. bullets, they would not chamber in a Cooper with a .250 neck. Upon investigation I discovered the .012" necks had become .015" to .016" necks when sized down to 22BR. I don't think you'll be able to use the cases unless you turn the necks AFTER sizing down.

Over the years I've tried sizing down first and then turning them. Also tried sizing them down without the button in FL die, firing in a forming barrel with upside down bullets, and then turning necks. But I think I finally found the best way to do them.
1)Trim 6mmBR cases to uniform length.
2)Turn necks to desired thickness as a 6BR.( I used a sized up fired 22BR case to set the length of cut)
3)Now size cases down to 22BR with expander button in FL die.(This will cause necks to get fat and uneven. Using a button in the FL die will make the expander die used in the final turn cause less runout.)
4)Now trim to uniform length again.
5)Turn necks to desired thickness again.

It is a little more work but you'll find you get a much more uniform thickness this way (.0002” extreme spread) and the cases once fired finish trim to an OAL will be .008” or so longer than cases done by reducing to 22 before turning. (1.541” as compared to 1.533”.) Neck runout did run up to .004” on some cases on me. But each subsequent firing roughly cuts that in half. And I like to have 3 or 4 firings on a case before it gets used serious.
