6 br projectiles for 10 twist and loads

Hi well ill get the story part out of the way. I managed to score myself a second hand parker hale target rifle. It is barrelled in 6 br has been bedded trued and trigger worked by a very good smith. Now ive been told it was put together by a pistol shooter who had enough after 30 rounds. It came with redding dies and 100 cases for about the price of a fitted barrel :-):-)

Now im heading away next week to the big smoke and im looking to pick up primers and projectiles for it. Are 90 gr lapua scenars good for target work for f class out tp 600 or so metres?
The gun store ill be going to has a 20 % off sale and I think I might buy 1000 of them as they are ussually pretty expensive here in australia.
Has anyone got any other suggestions of good projectiles for a 10 twist 6 br?

Re: 6 br projectiles for 10 twist

Burn,
I have not shot the 90gr Lapua's, But love the 90gr Berger, about the same bullet. 95gr VLD Bergers are iffiy for a 10tw, but I have shot them in some 10tw. But will not shoot in my current 10 tw. Berger 87gr LD are made for 10tw.

Ahh ok thanks mark. I dont think I can get a hold of the bergers atm but I am keen to try them

Re: 6 br projectiles for 10 twist

As Mark said, the 87 Berger VLD Hunting, 90 Grain Berger BT. Additionally, the BIB 95 FlatBase.

Re: 6 br projectiles for 10 twist

I have a 28" Krieger 1:10 twist 6BR. Favorite bullet is the 95 BIB. The 95 VLDs and 95 SMK both shot well in mine. I also have had good experiences with the 87 VMax. I tried the 70 SMK... not so good. I had some really good velocities with the 95s and RE-17. Haven't had that barrel back on in a few years. Time to do that. Luck, Tim

I have the same barrel for a build in process. I'm going to try the Bibs, 90 berger BT, and berger 80 flat base. Is your bore .236 or .237 and what is your freebore? Thanks

Re: 6 br projectiles for 10 twist

I havnt picked up the rifle yet so I have no idea on the bore or freebore atm.

Re: 6 br projectiles for 10 twist

I have a 10 tw krieger, without question the 90 lapua scenar is the best bullet Ive tested in this barrel, great results with n140 and 4895, super duper easy to tune and in my barrel works well with a jump so good for high power. Berger 87 was also great and limited but good results with the berger 90. The berger flat base 88 however was very difficult to tune and I put probably ten times as much effort into working w that bullet for a nowhere near as good results as the others. Seating depth seems especially finnicky with the 88 as a decently grouping load was terrible after taking a break from it and coming back 1000 rounds later when the lands had eroded a bit. Shot about 1200 rounds of the scenars down the barrel with no noticable difference shooting from a sling at 300 yards with no change to the tune. I'll probably shoot this barrel out with that bullet and will be hoping the next one has the same preference for that bullet, couldnt be happier with it. All my shooting with this rifle is at 300 yards.

Re: 6 br projectiles for 10 twist

Ok I have gone with 90gr berger bt target. I bought 2 boxes to start with. I am looking at running lapua brass cci 450 primers the 90 gr bergers and either varget(ar2208) OR adi 8208 (imr8208? In America I think.). Does anyone have any loads with 90 gr bergers ina 10 twist barrel with these powders. I live in australia so I am limited to adi powders mainly.

My 6 BR Cooper Phoenix 1 in 10 twist loves the 80 Berger Varmint with the 88's a close second. Neither was hard to tune.

In my 6BR, using Lapua brass and Federal 205M primers, I shoot the Berger 90 grain BT and Berger 87 grain Hunting VLD with 30.5 grains of what we call IMR 8208 XBR. I have shot up to 31.6 grains. Your mileage may vary. Start low and work up.

I've shot Varget as well, but the charge weight escapes me right this moment. Let me check and I'll post back.

Looks like I settled on 31.9 grains of Varget with the Berger 90 grain BT.

Same total config: Straight 6 BR. 10 twist. Lapua brass. 205M primer. Berger 90 grain BT. 31.9 grains of Varget. It was producing 3040 fps on my Magnetospeed chronograph. It's pretty warm. Start low and work up.

Thanks gspv, ill try the 8208 and 90 g bergers ill start low inside hodgon reloading manual safe loads and work up.
