6 BR Primer pockets / flash hole. case trimmer will not fit. New Lapua Brass.

I just recently aquired a 6BR, bought ne Lapua brass, resized the brass and went to use my case trimmer and it would not fit in the flash hole. Do I need to enlarge the flash hole or work on the pin on my case trimmer?

Are you using the Lee case trimmer? That's the one I use and I just worked on the pin to make it fit the flash hole. According to the cartridge guide, the small flash hole is what contributes to the 6BR's accuracy, so I wouldn't do anything there. You also have to make sure your depriming pin will fit.

For what it's worth, I'm on my 4 - 5'th firing and haven't had to trim my Lapua cases yet.

DON"T ENLARGE THE FLASH HOLE ... EVER! Let's first figure out what you're trying to accomplish.

Are you trying to shorten the overall length of your case? [That's what is usually done when referring to Trimming.]

Are you Trimming?

If so, What Trimmer Manufacturer?

Most chambers require very little trimming (if any). If you bought new brass.... I would not trim (or even think about trimming) until after the first 2-3 firings. Odds are, you will not have to trim those either.

Outdoorsman has it right DO NOT ALTER THE FLASH HOLE AT ALL!!!

I am still unclear how the "FLASH HOLE" has any bearing on your trimmer. I can see possibly the primer pocket depending on the case hold you use, but the flash hole??? Please explain.

I am using the lee hand trimmer. With other calibers after firing and full length sizing I thought standard operating procedure was to check it with a case trimmer and make sure it is not too long. Usually they don't need trimmed until after a few reloading, I just thought I would theck one or two and thats when I figured out the pin would not go through the hole. I had a custom die mad and the depriming pin fits.

Lee Hand Trimmer

Jim I hope this helps. I used my custom ordered case trimmer after about 4 rounds each in my 25-06 RP cases. I didn't bother to measure first. Remind me to have coffee first thing in the morning and put my smart cap on. I ruined the first 10 or so cases by trimming them about 0.015 too short. I can use them for foulers but they are too short now. Better check your Lee trimmer carefully. Not a knock on Lee just sharing my experience. Maybe they made EXACTLY what I ordered when I sent them my fired cases for a custom 6.5-06 trimmer. :o I checked the trimmer and it is at least 0.020 too short according to the minimum trim to length for my cases. I bought a stock 30-06 trimmer over the shelf, ground down the shaft to fit my .264 neck and now have viable trimmer.

If you've gone to the expense of purchasing NEW Lapua Brass and a custom made die it might be time to move to a trimmer that will give you as much precision as your brass and die.

This is better: https://shop.rcbs.com/WebConnect/MainServlet?storeId=webconnect&catalogId=webconnect&langId=en_US&action=ProductDisplay&screenlabel=index&productId=3571&route=C13J036N012 Or, other similar trimmers.

With the better trimmers they can be set to give you precise trimming, case after case, until you decide to change to a new case length dimension.

Also, case checking for length is done with a caliper vice the trimmer.
Here's the caliper: http://www.amazon.com/Neiko-Stainless-Steel-Digital-Caliper/dp/B000EJUBBU This one looks like a good buy too.

Jim,
If I might suggest, unless you have a Case Trimmer with a mic, I wouldn't be using it to measure or "check" your fired casing for length. I always check each and every casing for length using a caliper. I also use an RCBS Precision mic on each and every casing for any changes in the shoulders which will in effect alter your case length. And I don't know if you are aware of it or not, but decapping pins comes in various sizes and I've actually found a wrong sized decapping pin in some really reputable manufacturer's 6mmbr dies. Try and get into a habit that if something ain't working right or you sense something if off, stop and start measuring whatever isn't working properly. And as others have said, don't be messin with flash holes (other than taking small burrs when the brass is new and you never have to mess with that aspect of it again) as the manufacturer made it that size for a reason and they should be consistent across the board. Good luck and have fun!
