All guns shoot different but there looks to be a small group of powders successful with 6 BR Norma:

This looks to be the order of frequently recommended powders from members of this forum

VARGET
H4895
RL15
N133
N135

is this the list I should concentrate on when working up a load for the new to me cartridge?

In my case this is a Savage F Class 6BR 1:8 twist 30" rifle shooting 200 thru midrange 600

mid and short range recommendations:
N133
H4895
N135
H322

Longer range:
varget
RL15

Vihtavuori N-140 or N-150 should work well also.

VV N-140 does indeed work well in my 6mm BR 1:8 twist barrel for 600 yd F Class shooting. But so does CFE 223 which is just as accurate and meters well enough so that I can load it through my Hornady Lock N Load powder dispenser in a progressive press. I hand weigh when necessary, but avoid it when I can 'cause it's the least pleasant part of hand-loading as far as I'm concerned.

CFE 223 5 shot MOA at 100 yards with SMK 107gr bullets averages .320 with a best group of 1.60, plenty good enough for 600 yd F Class.

^^^^^ They BOTH work exceedingly well! I would also add VV N540>>it will keep the same level of accuracy and add some "eye-popping" velocity to the equation!

what kind of velocity are you guys getting with N140 and n150

Depends on a lot more factors than just powder brand/type. I get 2846 fps with 28.33gr of N-140 behind SMK 107gr bullets in a 28" Shilen 1:8 twist barrel. Changing any one of these parameters (plus several not mentioned) will result in a different MV.

My favorites for the 6BR are H4895, Varget, and I use RL15 for 105 gr bullets. I've also had good results with Benchmark and 90 gr Berger Match.

Please talk to me about 105 class loads with N550 and H4350. I have those powders in stock.

Are there preferences for 105 gr and a different preference for the lighter bullets?

As I read old posts the powders that come up the most oftern are Varget & RL-15 (heavyweight), N135 (middleweight), N133 (lightweight)

Are these the top overall powders?

I have H4895 in a good quantity but didnt see much good said about that powder.

HTSmith,
My experience is with a Dasher ,but I suspect it can be applied to 6BR also.I have a barrel, which I could not get to shoot as a 6mm AI . Had it set back and chambered as a Dasher. It would shoot good one day with varget and 105 hybrids but the next time out the groups would double in size to .3-.4 groups.I tried RL 15 and other bullets until the barrel had 300 rds on it between the two calibers.
Finally I decided to give it one more chance . I thought it needed a change in powder speed so I decided to go to H4350. It is now a whole different animal. Usually .1's at 100 yds . I then went to 400yds and after tweaking neck tension ,I had some 1/2 inch groups with zero elevation.
I think some barrels ,for some reason just have different harmonics . In these barrels, sometimes a different burn rate powder will allow them to find a wide enough node to become a consistent barrel. This one likes 35.7gr. H4350 with the hybrids jammed 15 thousandths. This gives me velocity a little over 3000fps.I tested from33.0 to 36.0 and never had excess pressure signs.
If I were testing in a 6BR , I suspect that I would test from about 30.0 to 33.0 , but there are probably some guys out there with actual experience .

After going back and reading hundreds of posts on the 6br forum over the wet weekend, I now know may of us are using H4895 with success. I am adding that to the first post for powders.

I use VV N135 for everything up to 68s in a 1-14. Have also had good results with 8208XBR, same bullet weights.
