6 br barrel hates 105 berger hybrids?

have 6 br that really hates 105 berger hybrids ( no good groups) would changing to a different powder make the barrel like the 105s? or just get a different bullet?
thx scott

What powder are you using now? Assuming its something like Varget or R15 and your twist is 8' or faster, I'd just change bullets. One note about the hybrids is I have found them to be less sensitive to seating depth than the VLD's, but they still have a spot that they like best. Seating depth still matters.

Hi varget 1-8 twist

I've never used the 6mm Hybrid, but in 30 cal have found this type of bullet to be far less position tolerant than claimed, and nothing like as tolerant as many of Berger's excellent BT models in 224, 264 and 308 calibres.

For instance in 308 Win, the 168 Hybrid either had to be treated as a VLD and put into the lands or moved well out and a good position somewhere beyond 40 thou' jump ascertained. The 155 model wouldn't shoot at all at my usual starting point 15 'out' or in the lands like the 168, but moving it back in 10 thou' steps saw it start to perform at around 45 thou' jump. At this point I'd had enough of the bullet and devoutly wished I'd bought more 155.5gn BT Fullbores which I'd used happily for years and which seem to work with any jump you care to give them and forget about compensating for throat erosion. Conversely, the 185 Hybrid has worked well for me at my starting position of 20 thou' out in a 300SAUM. (I was advised to try this amount of jump elsewhere on the AS Forum.)

In your situation, I'd move to another bullet before trying too hard with the Hybrid as there is such a good choice of excellent 6mm models in the 105-108gn range. I've found the Berger 108gn BT and Sierra 107gn MK (both tangent ogive designs) very jump-tolerant and excellent performers in the 6BR. I've also had good results from the Berger 105 VLD seated into the lands (but not hard-jammed) as have most people I know shooting this cartridge in competition.

A Criterion 6BR of mine would not shoot 105 Hybrids under .4.
Tried the Berger 105gr Boat Tail Target bullet and easily shoots in the high .2 to mid .3 moa consistently. Loading 30.4gr Varget .010" into the lands with CCI450.

I'd highly recommend them.

hi
found the problem with the 105 hybrids, also would not shoot any other bullets well either,
a friend noticed after another failed shooting session,
the rear tang on my savage was touching wood! used the dollar bill trick ,running the bill all the way around the receivers edges checking for clearence,
after removing some wood the first group was good! ,hopefull, still need to mess with seating depth but the problem is solved.
thx for the help!
Scott

My Dasher didn’t like the hybrid’s either, switched to Berger 108’s and didn’t look back. As said, the family of Berger BT’s, 80.5 .224; 108 .243, 185 .308, just tune easily, are accurate and repeatable. If your rifle won’t shoot the Berger 108 with a normal load, something’s wrong with your barrel. :-)

What Alex Wheeler says. I've done this so many times and it's amazing what a different powder will do.

Maybe it was a fluke, because there were apparently so many things against it happening, but my smallest 1,000 yard group EVER was with a 6 Dasher, 105 Hybrid, Alliant 2000MR powder and a Bartlein 5R barrel. All the "experts" said that any one of those components should have prevented it from happening. It was a five-shot group well under 2" in a registered IBS match and there were 80+ witnesses.
That barrel is long ago "toasted" but I still have (and shoot regularly) the 105 Hybrid; not in BR but other type matches. It still wins for me on a regular basis.
