Some people don't believe there is a world past 100/200 yd bench shooting.

Cat a lot of these guys are 600 and and 1000 yard shooters, and i bet most of them full length size. I know almost everybody i know of does. I also think that 2 inch and 3 inch 5 to 10 shot groups are not too shabby with full length sizing.

Good for you Jim. I had a bad weekend. I made a drastic mistake in Heavy. Some day i want to make it to Harry Jones. Not this year though. Too many matches left with almost no weekend off.

not to muddy these waters up more than they are..but when you guys say FL size with a custom die, you are using a neck bushing correct?

since I use a Forester die for my 6br have been happy with it, but always open to something new (btw tried neck size with 223 I have and never seemed any better than when I FL sized - but will admit that could have been me and my setup).

my understanding of fl sizing is that the die compresses the case body as well as pushing the shoulder back .001-.002... the major case body change here is at the body shoulder area, some of my dies compress the body .004(i think this is too much?) the redding body die i have in 6 BR pushes the shoulder as desired and only compressed the body by .001...i have the pt&g 6 BR reamer .2704. tight bolt closure is not due to body diameter but the case being long and the shoulder hitting the chamber shoulder, right? i understand a "bolt click" suggest a enlarged case that may respond to a small base body die, if fl sizing doesn't cure the click, otherwise discard? i find it interesting that a fired case will contract from the chamber wall allowing extraction but cases will elongate to give the tight bolt closure and we can correct this with shoulder bump. this could be an argument against fl sizing as the case is slightly undersize. since cases don't all react the same then fl sizing brings them all in line? bottom line...whatever gives you the accuracy you want.

Only a handful use custom dies, The cure to fixing the "click" on bolt opening is to buy a custom die? I went a different route and specd the reamer to be a bit larger at the base, or on the reamer drawing the diameter @.200" Some reamer makers want to get to "cute" with the numbers, and cause yourself much headaches. .470" @.200" is TROUBLE

Most of the custom FL dies have bushings. The big deal about the Harrell's dies is that he as a number of slight variations on the shelf, and when you order one, it is a good idea to call him first. He will tell you to send one or more fired cases. I prefer to send cases that have been fired with a relatively hot load, with only neck sizing, until they are tight. What you get, is a die that is selected for your brass, that is a bargain. The reason that he can offer this service is that his dies are not cut with reamers, but rather made on a CNC turning center, with their interiors done with a boring bar. This allows for small variations in dimension by simply altering the programming. I think that he gets around $70, but you might want to verify this. Some years back, a couple of friends had had custom barreled 6BRs built, and suspecting that their reamers might be on the small side, I suggested that they order dies from Harrell's. They ignored my advice, preferring dies that were shinier and with which they were more familiar. The problem was that their new dies were too large in the back to properly size their cases, and after discovering that no amount of adjusting could get around this, ended up buying the ones that I had suggested. They listened a little more attentively after that.

No matter how you go about it, your die has to end up being slightly smaller than the chamber cut by your reamer.

You can get there with a reamer spec-ed around, say, a Redding Type S FL bushing die. You can get there with a custom or semi-custom die based off your brass. I've had both of those work. I have JLC, Whidden and Harrell's dies. I'm happy with all of them.

What I have NOT had work is it just happening to work out with no work on my part.

Nothing wrong with that. Just out of curiosity, how much does your die reduce your fired brass, at the shoulder, and at the end of the dies reach near the head of the case?

The one that I know off the top of my head, the 6 PPC, is a half at the shoulder and one at the base when pushing the shoulder back a hair more than one thou.

All of my custom guns were bought second or third hand. What can I say, I'm cheap. Most came with over the counter one size fits all fl dies and I use them. They could be better but I personally have had pretty good results with them. Webs might last a little longer without clicking but I'm not complaining much. The same 100 pcs of 6 ppc that now click were fire formed by the first owner in the early 90's and will be replaced with the third barrel on the gun. No idea how many times they,ve been reloaded. I've done at least 25 on em. Can't say about the first two owners.

That being said there's really no reason not to use a fitted die these days. The price is right.
