6 ARC Powder for 90’s

Getting my hands on a Proof MTR 16”. Was going to build one for a little handy rifle but got a steal on this one, brand new.

I have a boat load of 90 TGK’s. I know Leverevolution seems to be a go-to but I know it’s filthy and not temp stable. What other powder would be good here? I was considering 8208, maybe even N-140? Thanks!

Well, what do you have on the shelf in the 8208 - LeverRevolution range?

I have loaded them with 8208, CFE223, LeverRevolution, and N540 for AR's one with a 16" and the other with a 20" (both Proofs).

To be honest, they have never been stellar in the accuracy department, but with N540 I can usually expect 3/4 MOA. I have used more N540 and CFE223 than the other two.

You may know this already, but LeverRevolution and CFE223 for that matter, clean up when the pressure rises. Can't help on the temperature thing though.

It is a long bullet for weight and that long nose makes it eat up space. In a bolt action where you have the ability to seat it out, I think it would be more funner for me. We will see soon on that.

8208 / H4895 / benchmark

Then it’s up to RE15 / N140 / Varget.

I’m not against trying a different bullet, I just have a lot of those. An 87 V Max would be just fine. I wasn’t aware of that on the Levr and CFE though. That’s interesting. I don’t need it to shoot 3k but if I was in the wheelhouse of 2800 it would be nice.

Suppose It depends on your goals. Perhaps my opinion is of little use as my rather extensive experience with the 6mm ARC has all been in a bolt action platform. My go to for 90 gr in a all copper bullet has been CFE 223, though I think the 8208 & N140 you mention along with N133 have serious potential, for your use.

No reason you shouldn’t try them as you have so many. It gives you incentive. You won't see 3000 with a 16" barrel, but you already know that. Is this a prefit, or an AR barrel? I see now. The MTR was familiar but it took a few minutes to resurface in my mind. Zermatt Origin correct? Even then you still may not see 3000 with the 90 TGK, but.....

Of what you have listed, the 8208, H4895, and Benchmark would be where I would look. All three are known to be easy buttons to find accuracy and their burn rate should allow you to see good velocity without any theatrics.

Maybe I should have stated "IMO, LeverRevolution and for that matter CFE223 clean up when pressure rises".

I have about 70 rounds of experience with the 6ARC in a boltgun, but that will change when my bolt gets back from getting bushed. I'm very curious how the ARC responds to more pressure. Mighty Mouse I suspect.

If consistency and accuracy your first concerns I d work with stick powders in H4895, Varget, VV540 burn range.

If velocity priority then ball powder such as cfe223, Leverevolution, AA2520 and TAC will fulfill that desire.

So, it “depends” based on your goals.

This is a bolt action! Thanks for the suggestion!

So I was originally going to build one. Something easy to get out the window / deer blind. Fun little gun. Well a buddy had that MTR sitting in the safe that he won in a raffle, gave me a steal on it. I will swap that stock out for a Manners CS probably.

3000 was just a outlandish number I threw out there, 2800 I think would be doable with a 90. Maybe. N140 would be handy because I have 8lbs that I’m not doing anything with.

I would have to disagree with you on this. In both my AR and my bolt gun I got the best velocity and accuracy with CFE and LVR with 8208. These are all 5 shot groups out of my bolt gun 22" shooting 90 Bergers @ 3125+FPS. The last target is 5 shot groups at 300 and 600yds.

Your velocity is far better than I thought possible!

BTW, 3125 fps is 243 velocity!! How’s cases holding up?
I am using Lapua cases, and I am on my 3rd reloading. So far, so good. I have shot this load out to 1040yds and my data has been damn close!! I have only shot it during spring, summer and fall so far. No winter time for me. To damn old and can't take the cold anymore!! This thing has been awesome!! I have never owned a gun that shoots this well and I have had a lot of them. I started shooting LR Tactical matches before there was a PRS. I also built a 22ARC only with a lighter contour barrel and it is a hammer too!! It shoots solid .3s and .4s for 5 shot groups. Then realized I didn't really need one since I don't call coyotes anymore, so I sold it to my son in law. I shot 77 SMKs in it but it shot most everything really well from a 60 up to an 80.5 here are two groups at 300yds and one at a hundred. Oh, and all of my groups past 100yds are shot off the hood of my pickup off bipods and a rear bag. I had neck surgery years back and can't shoot prone anymore with a damn plate in my neck....

If you seek speed, Lvr will get you there, tho not the tgk, I used to mess with the 90 eldx for a little while and lvr was giving me the best velocity, accuracy was good across the board on my ocw test, this out of a 24" Cle Barty gas gun.
Checking notes my choice load for the 90eld x was at 3040fps @ 30.8gr.

I have abandoned the 90gr for numerous reasons but mainly for a bit more ass so to speak. Now running with the 107smk 28.8 gr of lvr is magic. Spitting them out at 2740 fps, they are subsonic at just under 1400 yds. A viable long range small frame gas gun.

Last mag of the evening was putting out some incredible numbers. I have also found in my case that rem 7.5 have a significant improvement over sd/es over cci 450, of the two srp I have in use. So this is my primer of choice with ball powder.

The guilty party.

On a tangent I started using lvr in my 224 over powerpro2000mr. I was running 28.5gr of 2000mr with a 60gr vmax at 3067 fps ..using the same charge weight with lvr I am getting 3245 fps...quite the jump and accuracy is outstanding.

eta..I have seen a spike/drop in temp swing...on average I see about 30fps so going from coldest of winter to hottest of summer over the past years I've been messing with lvr and 6 arc About a .1 mil up/ down so very manageable.
