6.8 SPC bolt in Rem 700?

I'm contemplating building one of these for the kids to play with, and I was wondering if anyone here has seen one of the factory rifles yet? I'm curious as to whether they use a special bolt with the right size face, or do they have a longer extractor in a 308 size bolt? Or something totally different? I could bush the existing 308 bolt and do a Sako style extractor, but if big green has a better setup I'd like to go with that.

Hi i have just written an article on the 6.8 on a 20" barreled LTR. They are awsome i got 135gr MatchKings out at 2600fps that meant they stayed with a 223 and 80gr MAtchKings to 1000 yards. This load would be to hot in an AR but completly safe in a Rem 700. Use BenchMark with projectiles from 110gr and up and use H322 for the light ones the 90gr Sierra can go 3000fps.

You have a few options you can now just buy a Rem700 SPS already chambered. I think the Rem700 Youth is also available. But back to the Question The bolt face is the same as the 30 Remington you can get a 223 action and just have the bolt face opened and the extractor modified like they used to do for the PPC this will also allow it to be converted back to a 223 if you wanted to down the track. As you have said yes you can have a 308 size bolt face bushed and then a Sako extractor fitted but i would get the SPS and then re stock it or re barrel it if you were going to spend the extra money. Also the feed lips on the 308 action might make the feeding from a mag unreliable as they may have to much clearence i did not measure the diference when i had it here.

I am looking at necking it to 6mm and fitting it to an 8 twist barrel to shoot 105gr A Max'a. It will be awsome for small game like small deer and feral goats and also varmints with the 105's or even a 55gr BlitzKing.

But if you want to go factory take a look at the factory 6.8SPC on the Rem 700 SPS it would be hard to go past one at their price. I would however cut the barrel back to 20" like the barrel on the Light Tactical Rifle i have just written an article on.

I have a wildcat with the parent case 6.8 SPC in a Rem 700, bought a 223 action had the bolt face opened up,Sako extractor installed,
This was built before Remington started selling the 700's

Wild Bill,

Was there enough magazine length in the LTR that you tested to allow the 135SMK loads to feed through it as a repeater or did you have to use it as a single shot?

Hi Spot check the magazine was blocked so i had to feed the 135gr projectiles single shot. I had some 130gr spire points that i filed the lead off back to the jacket and loaded them to the lande and they grouped 3/4" at 100 yards like that with a healthy charge of Benchmark. If it was not a loan rifle for writing an article i would have mooved the magazine block back in the mag to increase the length a loaded round would feed. I have done this to toher rem mag boxes for 223's with 80 and 90gr MatchKings and also for a 6X45 that was loaded with 105gr A MAx's it is very simple and their is a lot of room blocked out because the actions are designed for the 308. I am looking at building one in 338to shoot 300gr VLD's in and will use the full length of the 308 mag for it. It will be like a 338 Whisper that feeds and ejects a lot better and will be also making the rifle a takedown. I wont publish the amount of BenchMark powder because it is unsafe if loaded in an AR but if you search the internet you will find a load that is essentionaly what i used and is completly safe in a bolt action or PM me and i can help you out.

I lucked into one of Remington's 1st Production Run Model 700 chambered in 6.8 SPC,as did many others.....thanks Al Shoemaker)with a SS action and 24" SS barrel resting in a HS Precision stock for cheap. I swapped out the bottom metal, mag and follower with gear from a model 700 chambered in .308.

My only experience with shooting the heavier .277 bullets is with the Nosler 130 gr BT. With the .308 magazine installed, I am able to seat the bullets right to the lands, off about .010") with a COAL of 2.450" and still have a repeater.

27.0gr of IMR3031 yields an avg MV of 2625 fps and only 12 SD. Very accurate load achieving groups of .5" or less. I am going to load up some rounds using other powders Quickload's suggests as being capable of reaching 2600 fps safely. May try the 135 gr SMK as well.
