6-6.5x47 40d Long Dasher

Grimstod

Machinist, Designer, and Shooter.
I have the itch to build another rifle. Of course it's probably going to be a wildcat. Because once you drink the poison you just can't go back right lol.

Probably us a Howa as my base action. I want this to be a lighter weight magazine feed-able (4rd) for mostly varmints and maybe some whitetail. Has to be 47L based case. I just cannot get myself to use inferior brass. Might spin up a second barrel though for a 6mm Creedmoor if I have time and for if shortages get bad.

Questions though. Should I buy a matching set of reamers or does someone else out there have the reamer set or maybe know of a sizing die combination that I could use. I hear tell you can use a Dasher FL sizing die to size these down?

Since I'll almost certainly be getting a custom reamer for this anyone know what JGS turn around is like right now?

Ha I forgot about that. Actually ran across it a min ago while searching for something else. At that time I did not have a lathe now I have two. Well three if I count the CNC lathe.

You’ll probably be able to use 6XC data as a starting place. Do you have a bullet and velocity goal?

Unless you stay low pressure, the body of the case will eventually need to be sized where the Dasher die stops. I would plan on a custom sizer. I like my whidden.

My Velocity goals are the same as a standard 6x47. Really not looking for speed rather the more forgiving nature of a slightly larger case.

Looks like I will have to do custom dies. Unless I can find a smith that already has them.

Around 16 weeks.

There’s lots of load data for the 6-6.5x47. 6.5x47 is one of my personal favorite cases. I have a 22x47 in the works, 6.5x47, 25x47 and I had a 6-6.5x47 I regret selling. The new owner loves the rifle and the round. sounds like a fun project, enjoy!

I've got a pair of Niel Jones dies and recently acquired a Newlon ( I think) improved dies. Mines basically a long BRA, 40° shoulder with the neck shoulder junction about .002-3 short for easy fireforming.
I've got a couple barrels for my Panda HG and have one for a 700 Remington SA.
It's a nice round in my experience.

I wanted to try Manson Reamers this time, just placed my order yesterday, 5 month lead time….

So basically it is a 6x47 with the 40d shoulder of a BRA and you have both a chamber reamer and FL sizing reamer? Shoot me a pm if so.

Sorry mine is a 6.5 not a 6, I do have a chamber reamer and go gage but no FL size reamer.

PM swd, I believe he has done this and actually just sold the reamer and brass I believe. I'm sure he can tell you how he went about it and what dies he used.

I had a 6x47 Improved built 2 years ago. Great shooting round. Clarence Hammonds built it for me, he has since retired and sold every thing.
