6.5x64 Brenneke vs 6.5x270

Are these two cartridges exactly the same thing or just very close?

Can 6.5x64 brass be obtained, I see that Midway has dies for it.

I did some checking and it looks like 6.5 Brenneke is out of production. It is a much older cartridge than I thought. There are many 6.5-06 fans out there and I wonder why many of them didn't gravitate to the 6.5x64 Brenneke when it was available being a 6.5x270.

I did to some looking at the 6.5x55 RWS. It looks to be in the same class of cartridge but has a shorter neck unfortunately, the plus side is brass and loaded ammunition is available.

From the looks of the cartridges it seems to me that the 6.5 Brenneke was the best of the bunch due to its neck and running out of a 30-06 magazine compared to the 6.5x55 RWS since it looks like the taper might be slightly different and it has a slightly smaller rim. .473 vs .470.

So what do you guys think. 6.5x55 RWS or make 6.5x270 from .270 casings?

I have a 7X64 Brenneke barrel for one of my F-Open rifles and it is an excellent cartridge. Huntington's has RWS brass in 7X64 and it should be no problem to run it through a f/l resizing or form die to make 6.5X64. I've also made 7X64 out of Lapua 30-06 brass with one pass through a 7X64 form die. The necks will just be a little shorter or you could start with some 280 Rem brass which has a longer neck. RCBS makes a 7X64 form and trim die.

The plan was to use cases I would not have to neck down or up. Since I can't get the 6.5x64 casings I would just get .270 Norma brass and make it a 6.5-270 unless 6.5x55 RWS is a good option.

It looks like the negative of the 6.5x55 RWS is the short neck, the positive is brass and ammo are available in the USA.

Several years ago when I built up a rifle for silhouette I elected to go 6.5X270 over the 6.5X06 for exactly the reason you mention. The 270 has a slightly longer neck allowing better support and ability to get the boat tail bullets closer to the rifling as the throat eroded. One could still use 06 brass if the wanted, but if it is chambered 6.5X06 then 270 brass would need to be trimmed shorter.

Can anyone tell me about the 6.5x65 RWS.

I can buy new brass for it and even loaded ammo. Does anyone thing the ability to by new brass can outweigh the advantage of the 6.5/270s better neck?

The problem with the 6.5x65 RWS is the .474" head diameter... You'll be stuck with just one brand of brass, and I don't see any improvement over the 6.5x64 B or its identical twin 6.5-270.

Does anyone know where to find 6.5x64 Brenneke brass?

One reason I like the idea of the 6.5x64 and 6.5x65 cases is the head stamp. It is not going to say .270 Winchester on it.

I was wondering if the Brenneke brass can be found.

You could try Ralf Martini

I have built both the 6.5-06 and the 6.5-270. I like the longer neck but the 06' has not had a problem being shorter. I've just started shooting some Laupa 30-06 brass but so far it's not doing any thing that my old prepared brass did. I have used every thing from US military to Winchester, including 270 shortened to 06. The 270 requires very little necking so the brass stays more concentric. I found that necking 06 brass in small steps helps this as in 30-06 die with no button then 270, no button and last to your 6.5 sizing. I anneal my brass before starting to neck down and before neck turning pior to loading. I like a neck clearence of .002 -.003 for most most rifles. My rifles are for long range fun but I did shoot one in NRA high power competition and did well with it and this was well before the 6.5-284 came around. I found that the old Nosler 120 solid base bullet shoot very well at 600yds for me, no Bergers in those days.
