6.5x55ai neck turning...

Just wondered whether anyone has knowledge on turning necks, prior to fireforming, for ackley cartridges - in particular my 6.5x55ai?

Not sure whether I have imagined it but was sure I had read something about not running the cut into the shoulder as per non ackley cartridges?

Regards NW

I will normally form them before I turn the necks. Others may do it differently but it's worked well for me. Hard to make a mistake that way.

I have done both in 243AI (only a couple pre FF). Seems a lot safer to do after FF - hate to trash some nice brass.

partially neck size then Nw then fireform then finish final neck turning to desired size

Can you explain your process please and explain why you do it that way?

At moment confused at what you are trying to say?

personally rich i turn my necks down to about 1 thou thicker than the finish thickness i am after then i fireform the brass then take the neck down to desired thickness by final neck turning then i use 0000 wire wool to clean up any debritus or burrs

its always best to cut in small ammounts any way wether you fireform in betwean any cuts of the neck wall, the final cut is a final finish so this needs to done properly

dont forget to run the cutter in to the shoulder a few thou to help eliviate future dough nutting

My 22-250AI is no turn and still had to turn them down by a few thou to fit the chamber or you have hard bolt lift in my gun.

Mark - presume there is only one SPUD in Norfolk? :-\

Was asking for experience/suggestions for ackley cartridges in particular and reasons behind these suggestions - I am versed in neck turning practices eg running cut into shoulder and the reason for it etc.

From what you have described is of interest, but would like more info on the first cut - its depth to the shoulder (how this alters on fireforming?), the reason why you cut then fireform then cut again etc.

My rifle is not a tight neck and in the past I have just performed an 80% to 90% cut on the necks.

Why??

Think you would be better to do first and second cuts to the same distance down the neck/into shoulder junction - is there reasoning behind your method?

:)
