6.5x55 in 1-10 twist

question;
I got a nice barrel used un fired, 6.5x55 match chamber Douglass Super match stainless, I mounted it on a Mauser MKX

interarms,MKX mauser receiver,EGW base 20 MOA Burris XTR scope, B&C Stock, glass bed, trued lapped lugs, will shoot it tomorrow

was able to shoot .5 MOA with factory ammo and stock mauser trigger

here is my question

I replaced the trigger with a nice 3 pound trigger, bought some HSM 142 grain BTHP ammo and shot 3 inch groups at 100 yards and all bullets were Keyholed, so I know 1/10 twist is not perfect for 6.5 but would I do much better with Higher Muzzle velocity or say 123 grain bullets as i am starting to put together my reloader.

only reason i got the 1/10 is it was a great price
Thanks

You will not be able to stabilize any bullet much over the 123 gr with your 10 twist. You have a light bullet shooter. It will make a good varmint or deer rifle with the light 120 gr and under bullets. Try you one of the 4350's and some 120 Nosler ballistic tips. My 6.5 Swedes (96 Mausers) have 8.5 twist and shoot everything I have tried from 100gr up to 160gr. 46 grs Accurate 4350 and the 120 Nosler BT really shoots. 42 grs Varget with Sierra 100 gr HP shoots and is devastating on groundhogs. With your short barrel you would never be able to get the velocity that might stabilize the 140gr and above weight bullets. Probably could not get enough velocity out of the case even with a very long barrel.

agree

I have a savage with douglas Match barrel 1/8 twist in 6.5x55 that shoots .2MOA with Federal match 140 grain, I just built this one for something to do on the weekend, maybe i will keep it for yotes :)

As you well know the 8 twist is better suited

for the guy that has only one Swede...will shoot

any bullet from 95s-160s with no problems....

Other than a long throat w/95s......

You have one heck of a varmint rifle there is what you have. 95 grain V-maxes and a Mauser action for great reliability. Since you don't have much into it you don't have to worry about it getting character from hunting rash.

oddly enough I shot some 140 grain match today and got 1 MOA, but I suspect the gun is capable of much better with lighter ammo

That's a nice lookin Mauser you have there! I have always loved the way a Mauser action looks, especially the old German K98k's, though they all look good to me. But those old K98k's just look like they belong on a custom rifle, especially with all the German military markings on them. I don't know why but I love them in some fancy walnut with good grain.

Good luck testing the light bullets, hope it shoots as good as it looks so you can really give the yotes something to fear!

As others have mentioned best to stick with the lighter bullets with that twist. The Nosler 100 grainer BT's have worked well in my old swede and the 95 vmax I have tested on paper aver very accurate also.
