6.5X55 CZ550 loads wanted

I am shooting a CZ550 chambered in 6.5X55SE. I have searched the forum and mostly what I am coming up with is recipies for longer barreled versions of the sweed. My rifle has about a 1-8.5 twist on a 24 inch barrel. The load,VV N560@49gr/130gr berger, Lapua case, fed210m primer)I have worked with tonight shows good accuracy and SDs,but is only doing about 2800 fps. Would you sweed shooters recommend a different load to get a bit more speed? This rifle is mostly used for hunting.

I used 45grs of H4350 with the 139s. Not sure of the speed but it shot to within .5 MOA of my 6.5x284 for elevation dials so it was pretty snappy out of my rifle.

I wanted longer barrel life so I backed the load down to 42grs and its deadly accurate and shoot about where my 260 did with a lot milder load.

Got any RL 22 or H4831 for the heavies...Varget works well with 120 NBTs in mt Tikka...VVN560 is the cat's meow w/140s...here's an average group from my T3 SS Tikka...dot is one inch..slow at 2636 fps & OAL is 2.980"..

130gr at 2,800 is not bad or the Swede, it's a round that doesn't need blasting into space to get good accuracy and knockdown power. I launch 139gr Scenars at 2,700 and it shoots a beaut at 1,000 yards :).

My CZ 550 Swede is the most accurate off the shelf rifle I ever owned. My present hunting load is similar to Dogbusters, 46g of Rl 22 with 140 gr Sierra game-something. This is really overkill. It's a step down from my target rifle which likes 48 Rl 22 with 139 Lapuas and Fed match primers. It will hold x ring at 1000 yds.,Pity I can't)My military rifles like off the shelf S&B ammo or PMC ok for hunting but I haven't target tested either. I reload them with 42g H 414 and that's plenty for deer in my experience. Easy to spot hits as the barrel doesn't jump. Any similar, slower powder is good. Depends on what you're after but the cartridge and the CZ are both great. The Swede is very flexible and rewarding. I'm sure you will like it!

With a 24 inch barrel that is about all the velocity you can expect from a 130 gr bullet. If you want more velocity drop down to a 120 Nosler ballistic tip and work up with the powder a might. This bullet is a real deer killer. My 6.5 Swede is a sporter 96 Mauser that I left the 29 inch barrel on and with 46 grs. AA 4350 which is a under 46,000 CUP load I get 3000 fps. It drops deer in their tracks.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, just wondering if 6.5 Swede will or will not fit into short action Savage, left port, single shot target action). Thank you

I don't have a Savage like you are talking about so I don't know if it will fit. My Sporter 96 Swede has a long throat so I load my rounds so they will just work though the magazine and give me the best accuracy. I can load everything to OAL of 3.050 and they shoot very well. Measure your action port and see if you could get a round that long in it. The OAL length of a Swede case is trimmed length 2.155 . The Swede case it about 3 thousands fatter on average than the 308 class case.

Does anyone have experience using a Speer 120 gr spitzer? I, too, have a CZ 550 in 6.5x55 and want to develop an accurate load. Any suggested loads; I reduce them when I start loading for it.
thanks in advance,

Larry

I have a sporter 96 Mauser Swede in 6.5X55 and I could not get the Speer 120's to shoot at all. With a 120 Sierra or Nosler Ballistic Tip 46 grs AA 4350 is a tack driver and a deer stacker. I get 2900 fps average from the 29 inch barrel. With about any 140 gr bullet 45 grs AA 4350 shoots great. It is not hard to get a 6.5X55 Swede to shoot. Just feed it a med to slow powder 4895's to 4831's and they shoot.

Good suggestion. I think the twist in a M96 vs a modern rifle should have an impact on "lighter/shorter" bullet performance also. M96 is appox 1:7.5 whereas a CZ550 is 1:8.5. Not positive, but the modern rifle could be "more friendly" to a lighter bullet. I'll start with a 4350-class powder and then review the results.
Thanks

The load you have is plenty fast with the high BC & Sectional Density bullets your using. Unless you really feel the need for speed, I would be perfectly happy with what you have.

My R93 semi-weight shoots the 140gr Trophy Bonded Bear Claw bullets right at 2650 from it's 22.5" barrel and it prints sub .4moa groups all day long, not to mention it is a killing machine. I only push my 95gr V-max loads to 2950-2975 in that barrel and they do a great job on prairie dogs past 800 yards with no trouble.

I have a CZ 550 American as well.
I've used the 120 Nosler over Varget out of my CZ and have moved on the 120 Barnes TSX and H414.
I'm getting just under 3000fps with both powders.
The Barnes bullet is awesome on deer with no concerns about lead chips in my sausage/chili meat.

Thanks, I am real interested in the Barnes Bullets; I have heard they can help wring-out the greatest accuracy from your loads. I'll try Varget.
Thanks,
Larry

You don't need any expensive bullets for deer. Sierra game kings are exotic enough, even cheap Remington core lokt bulk. Rl 22 and H 4350 VV 560 H 4831 SC are the top accuracy powders roughly in that order if that's what you want. Varget isn't likely. For mil surp rifles H 414 works great in low voltage hunting loads with 140 grain bullets. The 120's aren't as accurate in old military guns because the leade is so long for the original 160 grain round nose bullets. 139 Lapuas are the best long range choice for price vs consistency. You don't need a lot of velocity either. The 6.5's high BC makes it fly straight and pack a wallop with less recoil and blast than anything comparable.

The only problem I would see is you may have to remove the bolt to extract a live rd....no big deal on your application...

Ditto Dogbuster's remarks. . . . I also shoot a T3 in 6.5 x 55. Currently using 140 Berger VLD's and RE17. Was able to get serious velocity at well over 2900 before I ran into some rather bad pressure signs but accuracy was terrible. Went back down to a bit over 2600 and the rifle shoots little bughole groups. Apparently, my rifle just doesn't like to be pushed too hard.

There is nothing like a 6.5 Swede topic to get the juices flowing and start a very long thread.

Savage should try the 6.5x55 again and they would sell a bunch.

I handled a CZ 550 in 6.5 SE before buying the .308 but another 6.5x55 will be next.

I haven't see Reloader 17 in stores where I shop yet.

Wouldn't make more sense to get a .260 Rem. barrel from Northlander or SavageShooterSupply for the short action?
