6.5x47L vs. 260 in a 23" bbl, Speeds? Anyone try 156-160s in 47?

Looking at real world difference in two rounds with latest powders i.e. RL17, etc. as I have a build in the works that is to be 22-23", no more, for the purpose at hand.

Looking to run mostly 123s-130s for hunting and range work but may use heavier bullets at times, mostly at shorter distances.

Wondered if the 156-160 can work in the 47 with standard throating for 130-142s....anyone know? Have some for a Swede for woods range deer/hogs and may load a few for an elk/moose someday. Will the 47 case handle does anyone know?

Thanks for all replies.

40.5, must be the 47, not bad at all.

I'd say 2900 would be doable on high side, I was guessing 2700-2800 at reasonalbe pressures. Maybe the 47 does not give up so much to a 260 with 130s? Thanks.

Not sure about anything over a 140 in a 6.5x47, but I did get 3010 with no pressure signs in my "47" with the Berger 140 VLD and RE-17. Accuracy was not as good as with a 130 & Varget, but the velocity was sure there...

If you're going to use the gun in freezing temperatures, especially with heavy bullets (i.e. slow powders), I recommend you test thoroughly for consistent ignition in 6.5x47 (small primer).

Max. velocity and reasonable velocity may differ greatly, especially for hunting/"practical" guns. I can easily top 3100fps w/o pressure signs (double base powder) but I'm settled on a hair under 2900fps (single base powder). 260Rem, 26", 123-130gr HPBT, Vihtavuori powders b/c of availability.

I have similar results with heavy bullets (e.g. 160gr Woodleigh), although I haven't taken the trouble to find perfect powder (currently using too slow). The rifle is throated for 123gr Scenar, so heavy bullets are deep in the powder space. I'm settled on 2560fps with 160gr.

I recommend testing monometal bullets (preferably with drive bands). Insane penetration, although they're on the light side... (won't break up on impact despite the high velocity).
