6.5x47L twist

Should I get a 1:9 or 1:8 twist for the 120's? What is the heaviest bullet I can shot in the 1:9? I will have 0.125" free bore so I wont be shooting the 140's at all. Thanks, Nick

I went with a 8.5 twist for mine and I can stabalize a 139 Scenar with no problem. I would suggest a 1/9 or 1/8.5 for 120-130 grain bullets.

I have a 1:8.5" twist 28" Border barrel with 5R rifling in 6.5x47L that shoots 123 gr. Scenars with great accuracy. I don't think that I'd go with a 1:8" twist, even if I were using the heavier bullets. My 6.5-284 with a 1:8.5" twist 30" Bartlein 5R barrel shoots the 139 to 142 grain bullets perfectly well.

1-9" should be fine. A friend's .260 Remington, granted it has a little more powder capacity) shoots Sierra 120 MKs great with a 1-10" twist barrel. I think my 1-8" barrel is excessive for my 120s.

Thanks for the replies so far. But what twist? Does Shilen make a 1:8.5? I would like to order a barrel this week but still not sure on the twist. 1:9 sounds like it but still no resounding yes. Thanks

whats the $$ difference between the Shilen and the Bartleins- with the Bartleins you can order whaich ever twsit you want as they cut all their twists

might cost you a bit more but at least you get what you want

Talked with Boots Obermeyer a while back about twist rates for my upcoming 6.5x47 project. His experiences claim anything faster than 8 3/4 for even the 140 range of bullets to be too fast for accurate long range competitions. He shoots 140's in a 6.5x250 at he claims the "sweet spot" of about 2725fps. Good enough recommendation for me!

Thanks for all the input. I have decided on a 1:9 Shilen. If anybody thinks I am going in the wrong direction please let me know. Thanks again, Nick

IMHO you're okay with 1 in 9. But if you change your mind and use 140gn projectiles, you may get into trouble at low altitude and/or low temperatures.
