6.5x47L Hunting

I just had a light weight hunting rifle put together (Stiller Pred, Broughton #3, McMillan Classic, Jewel) & now starting to do some loading. In lieu of the x47Lapua Info Page not up yet, I have searched back & have found a good bit of data for 120gr+ bullets.

I'm really planning to shoot the 120 Nosler maybe 120 Sierra PH, but I also want to try the 100gr Nosler, 100gr Sierra HP, & even 95gr Vmax. Anybody have any "light bullet" load suggestions? I have found little to no load data under 120gr. This will be primarily a deer rifle, but will likely finds it's way to a few "varmints" as well. Thanks for any experienced load suggestions in advance.

Coleridge, I shoot a semi custom 6,5X47 Lapua. It is a trued 700 with a kiff bolt and reworked trigger, in a brown precision stock with a Kreiger barrel. Although I have shot 120 A-Max's the 130 Berger VLD's just flat out shot everything else. They are a hunting VLD and are deadly on game up to deer size. My most consistent powder has been H-4350 although not giving me the highest velocities. The 6.5 Lapua is not a finicky cartridge however and I get excellent accuracy with N-540 and RL-15 and also higher velocities than the H-4350. If you are shooting an 8 twist, you may want to try the 130's.

Coleridge, I've got 9 twist Broughton barrel, Pierce action and the Hornady Vmax 95 gr pass the chrono at about 3200fps with RE-15 38.5gr. H4350 does well but about 200 fps slower.

Thanks guys. It is an 8 twist. I do have some 123 A-maxs to try & plan on trying the 130 Bergers also, but was trying to find some load suggestions for the light bullets I wanted to try also. Keep suggestions coming.

One of the most accurate light bullet loads in my 9-twist .260 is 40.0 gr. of IMR 4064 with the Nolser 100 gr. b-tip. This is a very mild load, so translating to your -47L might not be too different.

I jumped on the 6.5X47 Lapua cartridge as soon as brass became available. I really like it for hunting and I shoot it in competition also.

I’ve tried the 120's but I felt that they were a poor compromise, the 130's have a much higher BC and with them 2,900 fps is not a problem. This combo has worked well for me on mule deer, whitetail, pronghorn antelope and one very good Dall ram. All of them were DRT.

I’ve tried to make the 140’s work but success has been marginal. If I’m going to shoot the 140’s, I have better luck using a little more horse power (.260 Rem. or 6.5X284).

The 107 and 108's will shoot well out of barrels with 8 and 8.5 twist. They have a pretty high BC for their weight and you can turn them up quite fast.

I like H 4350 and CCI 450's with both the 130's and 107's
