I read an article on another website that says if you are going to shoot the 140 grain class bullets in the 6.5X47L your chamber needs to have a "freebore" of 0.160" Does anyone have any experience with this amount of freebore?
.160" free bore with a one and a half degree throat angle works well with a lot of the 139-142 gr. bullets in the 6.5 x 47 Lapua. If you go shorter, the bullets wind up with the bearing surface back in the case when the bullets hit the lands. That's what I have on my reamer and that is what I use for any chambers where the heavy 6.5 mm bullets are going to be used.
FWIW - The reason I like the .160" freebore is that you can still run bullets like the Lapua 123 and stick them in the lands without getting close to running out of neck. I think a .160" is about the shortest optimum free bore for the 139-142 gr. class of bullets. If you were only going to run the big bullets, .020" longer as per Eric Cortina above would work great.
I don't get it. Knowing how much your throat is going to grow, at least mine has grown something over .06" in 1000 yds, why would you start so far out? My original PTG print sheets says .104". I had zero problems with my 130 Berger VLD's and H4350. Accuracy is still great having put 10 into .49 MOA just a few weeks back.
On any reamer, you want as much bullet/neck contact as you can get. The throat can only get longer with more rounds fired.
A dummy round with the bullet you plan to shoot the most, seated as far in the neck as you like is the best way to have a reamer cut. No guess work involved.

In the CIP datasheet the minimum freebore length is 0,177".
That works great for all bullets.
It`s a great cartridge for short actions (like Rem700) because you never get OAL problems with the magazines like the 260 Rem.
I make a lot of Custom AICS rifles based on Rem700 short action - also in 6,5x47 - great tool for shooting on long distances ;D
