6.5x47L for Silhouette

hi guys,

I'm looking to jump back into rifle silhouette shooting. I used to use a 308 looking now to build something with better ballistics and less recoil for shooting offhand. I've settled on the 6.5x47.

Thoughts on this? It seems there is a ongoing debate about the best caliber for this game theses days.

Also......anybody know who makes a good stock for a hunter class rifle? I'm almost thinking a factory Remington BDL stock might be the way to go but I can't find much info on silhouette setups.

Thanks!

There is debate about everything these days.
Sorry I don't have personal experience but due to lack of replies here I'll post this.
My gunsmith shoots silly wet(silhouette). His choice of caliber is 6.5x47 lapua for the most part. He says it's a good balance between energy required for Rams and recoil, but his personal favourite is 7mm br, don't ask me why coz I didn't ask him lol.
As for stock he makes his own from carbon fibre, it's light and stiff.

This would be a good question to post on Steelchickens.com. I seem to remember seeing a gear listing for the top national competitors, and their rifles were mostly chambered in 6.5x47, 6-6.5x47, 6.5Creed, and 6-6.5Creed. The reason why .243Win is generally considered unsuitable is because a lot of people in this game shoot factory rifles, and the factory twist on a .243Win rifle is usually not fast enough to spin up a heavy 6mm bullet. Whereas with any of the above mentioned ones, or a 6.5mm bullet, you're fine getting enough weight in your projectile for the rams.

If it was me, I'd consider a round that you can purchase from the store if needed. That's where 6.5Creed might be an advantage. You're trying to hit a target that's about 4MOA (offhand) so the difference between 1/4MOA accuracy and 1/2MOA accuracy won't really matter... JMO

Silhouette stocks are somewhat of a cottage industry... you'll need to seek out someone that makes them. Where I live, Evelio McDonald makes everyone's custom stocks. I don't think he has a website or anything, so you have to find his email. That said, I believe it is also possible to order a silhouette stock from McMillan. Most people I shoot with just use a factory stock with some kind of cheek riser pad tied onto it.

Great choice of sport! Good luck!

I think the 6.5x47 is fine for silhouette. You will ring some Rams, but that happens with 7mm as well. I shoot the 142's for Rams, and 123's for everything else.
As far as a hunting rifle stock, I think the Pharr stock is the best. ( if you can find one). I think frank Carrillo in Texas is making some on that patern.

Thanks again guys.

I have a McMillan silhouette stock ready to go so maybe I'll just use that one again.

I'll have to check out steelchickens and read up on what's good these days.

Xs,
The McMillan is an excellent stock in my opinion.
However, it will not meet the requirements for a "hunting" stock. This is from my direct question at the nationals a couple of years ago, while certifying my rifles.
Local matches probably will allow it, depending on the match director.

Thank you. I figured after rereading the rules for stocks it's not going to make it. I shot high power before I guess I'll have to do it again. And I realized the gun I'm piecing together isn't going to make hunter weight anyway!

Thank you!

I'm glad you're getting back to silhouette. I think it is one of the most challenging disciplines there is. But if you like a challenge, can be fun, and you don't have to spend a fortune to try it. We have two places in Missouri to shoot high-power. Where do you shoot?

I have 3 silhouette shooters I custom make their 6.5 /146/147 gr bullets for rams at 500 meters on a special match grade heavy jacket. They use 260 Rem caliber.
Since using my bullet, they don't ring rams anymore, they knock them down.

The 260 has enough authority plus light recoil to get the job done. And the cases are less expensive than 6.5X47 brass.
You don't need BR accuracy to hit steel chickens.

I live in eastern ND. we have a local range league here that three times a year shoots a full corse and for league shoots a 200m 20 shot course.

Im hoping in a few years to be able to travel to a few shoots and compete a little.

For sure.

I love the 260 but i like the idea of trying the 47 for kicks. I'll probably use this gun for some target shooting outside of sihoette and possibly a hunting gun a bit. Might as well give her a shot!
