6.5x47L 147 Eldm's with R22..Don't Bother.

After reading another thread about "heavy for caliber trying a slower powder" I decided to try R22 with 147's in my 6547. HOLY MOLY!

Loaded at the lands, slightly compressed, in new cases. They absolutely would not stabilize. I did a ladder test and velocity was from 2350 to less than 2500. R22 probably isn't the best for temperature stability but they didn't get cold that quick (40 degrees) I was really surprised..I was expecting 2700-2750 max speed. I dont think fire formed cases would've been any different. In the end..I think Hornady 147's are just too heavy for the 6547...but maybe it's more about that long bearing surface. That being said I will try another powder.

Here is some food for thought: 1.) For "heavy for caliber" bullets in the 6.5 x 47, H4350 is on the cusp of being too slow. 2.) RL-22 is a tad slower than H4831 and about right on par with IMR 7828. These powders are considerably slower than H4350. 3.) It is doubtful you could build up enough pressure in that case with RL-22 to even burn the powder relatively efficiently, thus causing a "dirty burn". 4.) RL-22, along with the older Alliant powders burn very dirty when they ARE being burnt efficiently! In the 6.5 x 47 case it would not reach high enough pressures to come close to a "clean" burn. 5.) RL-22 is W-A-Y too slow and I would not use it.

If you must use a Reloader powder, try RL-16, it is much closer to H4350 than RL-22 is. It would be a much better choice..

I was kind of going off the burn rate chart. It was just an experiment though. Yes R22 is very dirty...I think black powder is cleaner.

May not be of use, and you may have already been there. I tried the 143 g ELDX, with ADI 2290 (similar to H4350), shoot great (head shots on rabbits @ 200 m), but not fast around 2550 / 2600 fps (give or take), out of 1 in 8 22" with suppressor.
Guess depends what you are shooting at , and range. cheers
