6.5x47 vs 284 barrel life

I'm looking to put another barrel on a rifle and I know it's a vague question and can be influenced by may factors but for those who have messed with these 2 chamberings a lot, what would you say has the edge in barrel life? I'm not looking to pour the heat on either one of them, going to be a 28-30" barrel, with the 6.5x47 I was hoping to get the 130s around 2975 and with the 284 looking at the 162-168 bullets at 3,000.

The rifle doesn't shoot in any competitions (heck nothing within a daytrip around here to shoot in). It's currently a 29" heavy palma 1-13 308 that I mess around with on the farm at 600-1000yds, typical day is 25-30 rounds prone 3 shot groups (occasionally 5) and is something I just screw around with to help improve skills. I know neither of the chamberings I'm looking at will have the same barrel life as the 308 but was hoping for something with a little better BC.

A 308 lasts a long time. I am sure neither would match the round count of a 308. A 284 should go 2000 rounds or close. I believe a 6.5x47 would do the same. They are both very accurate. It would be a matter of what weight bullets you want to shoot and what you mainly are going to use it for. Either one should be good for deer, groundhog or target shooting to 1000. Matt

They will be very close. I would say that the 6.5x47 will have just a tad better life though. Less burned powder is pushed down the barrel with it.

I would guess a 6.x47 would be far better because of the least amount of over bore .
The number of rounds would just be a guess . Heat and pressure It what burns a barrel .

Yeah, the pressure thing makes me wonder if the Shehane 284 is worth taking a look at too. I have no fear about forming, turning or monkeying with brass so it could be an option, same velocity with less pressure.

You will have to run about the same pressure in the 284 to get to the best load node. For this reason most dont get more then 10 reloads with the 284. Some manage 20 but its still nothing compared to the 25-35 that a 47L gets.

Barrel life on the 6.5x47 is quite decent. I got 2700 rounds out of a 26" Maddco barrel which was still comfortably shooting X's when I took it off. 2000 rounds is what I got out of a 284 - 30" Brux barrel. It was toast when the barrel came off.

I shoot both in competition and my 6.5x47 barrels last about 50% longer than the 284 barrels. My buddy just retired a Krieger 6.5x47 with 4500 rounds and it was still shooting 1/4 moa.

Not to hijack the thread, but where does a .260 fit in this barrel life thing?

Good question, I pondered one of those also since a straight 260 isn't much more than the 6.5x47, I don't know anyone that runs one but on paper it seems like you could get the 130 to that happy 2950-3000 in a long barrel with out having to stand on it.

Shot the barrels out of 3 260s shooting comps. They were history at around 23 to 2400rds. My 284 had 2400rds on it when I set it back and now has another 1100rds on it and is still shooting great. The 284 will out shine at 6.5 in the wind hands down. I have shot them side by side with both the Creedmoor and the 260 and the 284 just flat shoots tighter the further out you go.....

I get 129 Interlocks to 3000 with 44 grains of Re17 in a 24-inch barrel. No problem in a long barrel.

The 6.5x47 would probably last longer but neither chamering is likely to produce barrel life equal to the .308 Winchester. When it's all said and done, expansion ratio is the hinge pin of predictable bore life.
