Yes lead shot in a rear bag is disastrous. Also make sure a bullet will slip freely into a fired case

Iy had crossed my mind about the bag being filled with lead shot making the gun kick away during the shot because it is to hard .
Normally my guns shoot good with the setup I have but I may try another bag with softer fill .

You might try just doubling up an old terrycloth washrag or the like and lay it in the rear bag's vee under the stock. That should dampen any rebound effect enough to show an improvement.

I read up on different types of filler for my rear bag , I went to tractor supply and bought some sand blasting sand
( black beauty - medium ) several people suggested it .
Gonna give that a try .
My front rest has a leather bag and it is filled with coarse sand and feels about right .
I hope this will help my groups .

it should, I’ve been through this myself getting just the ideal mix can be trial and error. Too soft wasn’t good either
IIRC I have medium grain sand in the rear bag (ears), I use an 80/20 mix of chromite heavy sand and Black diamond media blast at about 90% fill.

Shot off a bench with a rest front and rear
No wind .
Shot this today . ( load development ) Puts 2 in there good most of the time and throws out the third .
cannot figure out why this is happening . Any advice ?

This may be something I missed but are you single loading or shooting from a magazine?

Ill try shooting 2 then shoot 2 later .
Yes I am on the upper end of pressure . 38.7 gave hard blot lift and extractor mark , pierced primer .but 38.4 all signs went away .
37.5 normally shoots good but this is a new lot of powder has opened it up .
I feel as though I am a efficient shooter but am always trying to improve .
I have a fairly new sightron s111 8-32 and
My trued action is bedded in a good stock so I don't think my equipment of faulty but I cannot rule anything out 100%

So are you saying this is a known combination for this rifle and shot good before you changed lot# of powder?

I think his promise is in the primer. Too hot for the Varget ... try BR4 CCi400 or F205M, maybe you can find a solution ...

Some years back, a friend and I were working up loads for a fancy rifle that was driving us batty with thrown shots in test groups. It turned out that the culprit was a rock hard rear bag. That particular rifle did not like a bag filled that way. Another thing that I would try is to reposition the front bag a lot farther back on the stock.

Mine was lowering the density of the front bag that fixed my problem for a particular rifle.

I run a 6.5 x 47 Lapua with 130 grain Berger VLD's, CCI 450's, with either 37.5 gr. Varget or 41.5 gr. H4350. This yields approx. 2900 fps. I am kissing the lands so basically 0.000 jump. These are both dependable 1/2 MOA loads.

Upgrade your bullet to Berger VLD's. The Hornady ELD is a budget bullet. Also, shoot 5 shot groups for evaluation.

Seating depth is your course adjustment. Find out what works best with your barrel for bullet seating depth. Then, fine tune with powder charge/velocity.

After taking several peoples suggestions and not having much luck I took some advice and emptied the lead shot from my rear bag and filled it with medium grit sand blast media from Tractor Supply what a difference it made !!

Can you imagine the problems that would be solved group wise and the backs that would be saved if heavy sand was eliminated in the shooting world? Happens every time

I shot some good groups off of that lead bag through the years but changing the fill sure made this gun shoot different . Makes me wander what I could have gotten out of the guns in the past .

I personally like the lightweight filler in my Triad Tactial wedge bags.

It packs and bounces like concrete instead of absorbing the vibrations. Just know it works

To share an experience; The Black Diamond Media blast has sharp little edges that broke down quickly then packed tightly.
taking the advice of very accomplished shooter we made an 80/20 mix of chromite and blast at 90% fill leaving regular sand in the ears , a tea spoon amount one way or the other makes quite a difference.

Yep , It only cost about 8 bucks but it's the only size bag they had . I have enough to fill a 100 bags !!!LOL
