6.5x47 Surprise

I expected best accuracy at the higher load levels but found my 24 inch heavy varmint 1 in 8 shoots best with 35 gr RL15 behind a jammed 123 A Max, < .5. When I moved past 36 gr the groups opened and at 38 they became patterns. Does this surprise anyone else?
I am going to try 130 Berger, Target and Hunting next. Both bullets seem to have the same dimensions. Hope they shoot the same. Going to start with 32.5 gr of RL 15.

There could be a myriad of reasons why... To list them (the possibilities) would take up most of this page... If you are not getting the velocity you want with RL-15, because of the lower charges your rifle prefers, try other powders.. You have VV N540, Varget, N550, H4350 as the most widely used powders in that cartridge. If you stay with 123 / 130 weight bullets, N540 and Varget are excellent "alternate powders"..>>>Going to heavier bullets, then N550 / H4350 become the ticket. Some people use RL-17 to gain the velocity>>>I have never been able to get the accuracy with that powder, however, every barrel is different.

Velocity is not a problem, I am one of those guys that don't care how fast it is going as long as they all go in the same hole. Because of the case design, I figured best accuracy at the higher pressures. Going to do a ladder test with 130 Bergers this morning.

Most cartridges have a "high-node" ... If you can use it>>>good.. BUT make sure the high node has a wide window of "play" in it.. Example: if you have a high node of 37.5grs>>>see if you can get the same accuracy with 37.8 and 37.3>>>then any swings in temp will have little or no effect on your accuracy..

Congratulations!

An accurate consistent load is what we all hope for.

Enjoy it!

The load I have shot most through 3 barrels in the 6.5L is a very low load at 34.8 g Varget under a 130 g Berger VLD sparked off by Wolf SRM primers. This is the most consistent load I have shot in that gun and I have competed practiced quite a bit with it out to 1,000 yards with goo results. Lately I have been shooting 37 g RL-15 with the same bullet and primer at the 1,000 yard line to get a little more velocity.

Long story short: Low nodes can be very effective.

I shoot a lighter load of R15 with Berger 140s. It is very accurate and I've not found increasing the charge makes it better....
