6.5x47 Rifle Build

You are headed down a good path.

One question: is the 260 still low round count if you double the number of stated rounds fired? Human nature at work there.

Something else there, Bob.

I recommend that you start out with a non-VLD bullet. The VLDs are often sensitive to seating depth. it can be very aggravating.

Look at the Berger Hybrid design, the Lapua Scenar, Sierra Match King, etc

Thanks Greg, When I get the rifle, I will give you a call and we can chat some more. Need a recommendation for a scope next. - Bob

Bob,
You cannot go wrong with having Clarence Hammonds build your rig. He has done 3 for me so far and they all shoot better than I do! He is a fantastic gunsmith and an even better person. I can't count the hours I spent in his shop just bs'ing the day away. I even had to take my wife with me once to prove I wasn't having an affair!!

I almost hate to post this, because he hasn't been real busy and his turn around on my guns was CRAZY! On a re-barrel, he had it back to me in a few days. I had him modify a brake, and he did it while I waited. WTF!?!? Unheard of in today's time when "2-4 weeks" means 6 months!

I am fortunate that he only lives 15 min from my house, and I will be hard pressed to go anywhere else. Best of luck!

Thanks Bill, Clarence is one of the guys I have talked to. At the moment I am trying to find an action that will make me happy, though without Greg helping me, I am not sure I would know what that would be or not. Looks like I might be able to get my hands on a Panda right away or a Marsh right away or a BAT in a reasonable amount of time. I have already picked the stock and trigger and am pretty sure of what scope, so who knows I might get to try this sport before I leave this world.

I travel through PA frequently and have be in touch with the guys at Williamsport about getting into the 1,000 yard school this season when they pick some dates.

Ciao - Bob

Bob,
If you're looking to take a course to help with the learning curve, take a look at these guys. I was relatively new to competitive shooting and took their intermediate course. Learned a ton about trigger control, proper position, ..... Got me hooked on ftr and precision shooting. Great guys too!

What type of rifle are you looking to build? bench, tactical prone etc. The 6.5x47 is an incredibly fun cartridge to shoot. Mine shoots 140's and I don't even bother taking it out unless I'm shooting 600+. When I don't need the 6.5 I shoot the 6br and even then I rarely shoot the 6br under 300. For what you are looking to do you should consider how often you will shoot past 300. For the distance you area talking about the 6br will get it done and even cover 1K under decent conditions.

Thanks FTR in PA (Where in PA) I will look into that.

Thanks Drop Port,

I have a Remington 40XB that is being re-barreled in 6mmBR Norma right now. Will be playing around with it and my Remington 700 Varmint in .22-250 to get some learning it.

I talked to Bob White the other day about attending his seminar and possibly shooting in his local Winter League. I am meeting with him hopefully this coming Tuesday.

I can get to Williamsport easily and plan on taking their 1,000 yard course and I have access to 300, 500 and 600 ranges.

Not sure what I am going to do. Greg J. has been guiding me through the maze and I have been having fun putting things together. Hopefully I will start shooting one of these days. I need to have hand surgery this winter, so I have some time.

I live in York. Shoot a lot at a local range (200 yds) but also at New Holland (700 yds) and occasionally go to Mifflin (>1000 yds). Mifflin is where Black Hat holds their courses. Not sure if you're looking to start shooting bench or F-Class, but New Holland has F-Class matches monthly, and they are open to the public. Great place to shoot. I've never been to Williamsport, but I heard good things about it. Prob about 2-1/2 hours from York, so not a day trip!

Best of luck and let me know if I can help at all.

I was married to a girl from Harrisburg and had an office in Nazareth for a time and then had a customer in Mifflinville or Berg off of Rt 80 if that is the same place and did some management consulting for the York Water authority, so I know the area pretty well. I am interested in Casual Bench Rest. When I hunted, I did some north of Williamsport so I am pretty familiar with the state. Hopefully I will get to meet you on one of my trips.

Tuesday I will be driving about 400 miles round trip from New York City (204 more miles round trip from my home on Long Island) to get powder and components that just came into stock at a supplier I use I will do that in a day. I like to drive. Thankfully I have a car that gets me over 50 miles per gallon. I could fly, but bringing back shot is problematic on weight, plus getting to and from the airport is another issue this time of the year. Too cold for the folding bike.

Cheer, Bob
