6.5x47 Questions

OK Guys, been following the history of the 6.5x47 for a few years now and thought that this would be a great hunting round for kids in my family starting out. I have a Rem Model 7 (current 308) that I would be the basis - I also have a Shilen #1 contour barrel that will finish out at 22" - my thoughts were that I could handload 120 Accubonds at around 2700-2800fps. This seems to me to be one of the most efficient rounds to come along in many years which I feel would also translate into mild recoil. My main concern is reading about bushings for the bolt and some talk of primer failures ( is this because of the higher chamber pressures?). Any feedback and recommendations would be appreciated before I continue on this path.

Lets see what the Rem experts say but here are my thoughts:
My Savage 6.5x47 is a stock bolt and head with no special modifications. I got it used and had primer problems at first and it was purely a headspace issue. Corrected the headspace problem and works fine since then. At 2700-2800 using a 120gr pill, I don't think you will have pressure problems. I say build it and more than likely, you won't run into problems. If you do, you can have it corrected. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

It's a very good round.

I have never had a primer problem. I use the CCI 450's. You shouldn't have a problem getting 2700 out of the 120's.

Yes it's probably a good ideal to send the bolt to Greg Tannel to have the bolt bushed. It's not that expensive and the turn around time is good.

I have two rifles in this caliber.

It's a great round and I have built several on rem 700's. All of the bolt were sent to Greg Tannel to have the FP bushed. In fact I got 2 bolts with him now for 6.5x47L. CCI 450's and I have not seen a primer problem.

Last fall proved to me that the 6.5x47L with a 130 hunting vld is bad medicine for whitetails.
