That's hilarious ! I have a couple AR15's that are actually not that hard on brass. I'm hoping if I build and tune it right it will be the same.

15's aren't usually hard on brass. 10's are a different story.

Surprisingly the LR-308 I built isn't that hard on brass. The 6.5 Grendel on the other hand is extremely hard on brass without a H3 carbine buffer to slow everything down.

My 308 isn't hard on brass but but of my 6.5's are. BUT most of the reason is running a can on them, and that's with a Tubb spring, Heavy Slash Buffer and an adjustable gas block.

This is my 6.5 Grendel. I run a Geissele Super 42 H3 buffer and spring in it. Eventually the stock will get upgraded to the Magpul PRS but I'll retain the carbine buffer tube and Geissele buffer and spring. It just plain works.

I wonder if I would redeem or dig myself a deeper hole by saying I'm in the process of putting together another rifle in 264 Winchester magnum?

Not my first choice, but an interesting project, and it seems to be a cartridge with a certain something that sparks recurring interest from keen riflemen.

I did something similar in the very early days of F-Class with a formerly prone 7.62 target rifle rebuilt into a .300 H&H Magnum, the Camp Perry Wimbledon Cup 1930s era winner. Despite everything being 'wrong' with this cartridge design - far too long a case, hardly any shoulder angle etc, etc - it shot remarkably well despite it being a budget 'parts bin' job based on a reworked Winchester Pattern '14 action. (ie the Brit version of what you good people call an 'Enfield' originally made for our .303.) The only downside was short (Winchester) brass life - the belt expanded very quickly and the fired case became so tight on the fourth firing, that big rugged action's huge extractor claw and massive primary extraction power simply tore through the rim leaving a stuck case.

The 300 H&H may not be perfect but it has a long service life and has provided us with other chamberings. Like you it may not be my first pick. But it just plain works. And what's not to like about that?

Just so you know, dolphins cry when you shoot pretty Lapua brass through a gas gun.

They are not crying - "little brass ejector smear is good." I did swim among spinner dolphins off Kona, HI.
