6.5X47 Or Necked-Up 6X47SM?

As someone who has successfully wildcatted and shot a .25 Ackley-necked version of the Ruarg 6X47 Swiss Match round, I'm keen to know if the new Lapua 6.5X47 is actually no more than, in terms of dimensions, a necked-up 6X47 Ruarg case. Have you compared the two?

As you say there is great potential for necking down this new and AVAILABLE case but its a pity you never got to play with the Ruarg offering in 6mm. I still can't believe you chaps from across the "big pond" could not do a deal with Ruarg on the import - especially as I furnished you with a contact name and number at their factory. Perhaps though the brass was/is just too expensive at a time when the cost of filling your SUV's,read getting to the range) is at an all time high?

Sarcasm noted.

I believe it's a little too early to be making comparisons or assumptions regarding the two cases since one is barely known and the other is a virtual unknown. It would appear that they are ballistic twins and if that assumption is correct it boils down to availibilty and quality of brass. Lapua has a worldwide reputation for quality and I think that is what is driving the interest to date. I have only seen a couple of the RAUG cases but if they are representative of the whole I would certainly opt for the Lapua, assuming the usual Lapua quality. JMHO

Headspace dims as follows with the .375 insert in the SP tool

6.5x47 - 1.460
6BR - 1.135
6XC - 1.510
6x47SM - 1.422
243win - 1.650

I read somewhere that the Ruag cases were superior to that of Lapua in general, must then be amazing). Ray, you obviously disagree - what exactly put you off.
What are the respective shoulder angles?
What would theoretically be the best option for a 6mm,if availability was not a problem)- a standard 6mm,6mm SM)or a wildcat,6mm Lapua)?

For the last 3 years there has been a 6.5mmXC available in the T2K from Mcmillan. I thoroughly tested it about 3 years ago.
There is no question that the 6.5 will have improved barrel life over the 6mm but but with no other gains. It generates more recoil and the bullet will drift more. Yes it will make a good 600 yd cartridge but it is basically no better than a 6BR with a 107 gr bullet.
The 6.5 needs a case with the capacity of a 260 Rem in order to come around. The problem with that length of the 260 case is that when you load a 140gr weight bullet to magazine length then you have pushed the base of the bullet into/past the neck shoulder junction and your accuracy will suffer.

In necking the 6X47 SM to .25,not far from being 6.5!?) it was with the idea of producing something akin to a super-accurate Ackley improved 250-3000 and with all the advantages of the finest quality brass known to man. I have no intention of shooting anything heavier that 87g bullets and hence my chamber reflects this: When bullet is just off lands flat base bullet sits as deep as it should do.

Moral of this story is build your rifle to do one job well and not two half as so! I know of no factory offered rifle in 6.5X47 so have Dave Kiff put your bullet where you want it and give the right amount of thought to action selection.
