6.5x47 -- Not much interest?

I got a 6.5x47 Lapua barrel for one of my Savages a few months ago. I like this cartridge but am just now starting to reload for it -- I got through three boxes of Lapua ammo and I finally have 60 cases to reload.

I did some searches on this cartridge in this subforum and only found nine threads that had posts in 2008.

Why isn't there much interest on this round? It really seems like a good medium to long range, accurate, long barrel life cartridge.

when i heard lapua was coming out with a 6.5, i thought great, now there will be another fast 6.5 for pushing those sleek 142 gr. bullets. same with the 6.5 creedmoor. then the rounds come out and they shoot as fast as a 260 rem. or if they shoot over 2900fps the case is shot. how about a shorter body, longer neck 6.5-284???? cliffe

Everyone I know that has one is too busy shooting them to yak about them I guess. Most of them have a stupid looking grin, too. By the way, mine's still at the 'smiths. No stupid grin for me. :,

Got my brass and dies today should have rifle in two weeks needless to say I'm very interested If there is anyone out there that wouldn't mind sharing some reloading data I would appreciate it I plan on shooting 130 Berger VLDs H4550 and either 205M or CCI BR primers I have a 28inch Bartlein 8.5 twist

Cliffe - No kidding. Push the shoulder back just a bit, leaving a longer neck, get better load density with H4350, and maybe even help barrel life just a touch.

Pity, the 284 case is just a touch small for the heaviest 7mm bullets and a touch to large for the 6.5s. I still like mine though.

Most of us who have built or shot a 6.5x47 have concluded that is is very, very good with the 120s, very accurate with the 130s but maybe a tad too small to get into that bullet's ultimate sweet spot, and not enough boiler room for the 140gr class bullets.

But I don't see a problem with that. The 123gr Scenar is a very accurate and forgiving bullet and will give excellent results at 2900-2950 fps, a speed you can get with a 6.5x47 Lapua. From the reports I've heard, the brass is actually very robust, as long as you don't go crazy with loads.

moderator, i agree with everything you're saying. but the guy was asking why there wasn't much interest in the 6.5x 47. i think that it is a great round. i just wish they had come up with a round, in speed ) to compare with the 6.5-284. you would see way more than nine threads if that would have happened. if you or anyone else built one, thats great,good luck and have fun with it.all guns are fun to shoot. barrel life should be good. accurate too. keep on grinnin'cliffe

This is directed at the Moderator or Site Administrator: Has there been any thought toward doing a 6.5x47 info page, like you have for several of the other popular cals? Maybe it is time for one. While I don't have one presently, it is a cal that I'm interested in, as it appears others are. TIA

Interestingly, I have several acquaintances that have built 6.5X47's and to a person, they have all had difficulty making them work. Nobody had any illusions about their suitability for 142 grain bullets, but even with light and medium bullets, they have been tought to find an accurate load.

Odd, because there seem to be so many written stories about them doing very well.

That is my rig pictured in the link posted right above, and I could not be happier with the performance of the 6.5x47.

I am shooting both Berger 130s and JLK 130s, and accuracy is very good with both. I shot a 300 yard F-Class match last week here at Bayou rifles, using Varget and the Berger and shot 199-5, 199-9 and 200-11.

Finding a good load for my 6.5x47L was easy, much easier than I thought it would be. As for it being competitive/better/worse than other rounds, it depends on one's needs. For me, getting less than 2000 rounds out of a barrel before needing work is completely unacceptable and I doubt Lapua was trying to design it to shoot 1390-142 class bullets and compete directly with an 6.5-284.

Thanks to Lapua! A 123gr Scenar at 3000+fps with low recoil, good barrel life, good brass, accurate, and easily fits in a short action magazine is near perfect for a lot of shooting games.

As has already been discussed, nothing wrong with the case. Strong as a SBH but there is no replacement for displacement.

Lapua never designed the case to equal a 6.5-284 but for a 300m tack driver. This is does very well and at that distance,and further), the 123/130gr range of bullets works just fine.

It equals the 260R using a smaller case - no more, no less.

I don't think the Europeans get into the 6mm as much as the 6.5??????

In NA, there are an abundance of great 6mm bullets that using this case, give similar/better wind drift performance AND less recoil. Barrel wear goes up but that is not too bad and certainly much better then the big 6.5's.

We now have three nice case volume families - 22/250 variants, 260 variants/Swede, 6.5-284.

Pick whichever gives you the performance desired and enjoy.

My limited experience is with a 6.5x47L that’s one of 3 barrels that share the same action and stock. Unfortunately, because it makes a bigger hole, it hasn’t been able to shoot as good as the 6X47L I have and the 6X47L hasn’t been able to shoot as good as the 6BR barrel. All 8” twists. So right now I’m contemplating re-chambering the 6X47L to 6BR and am waiting for some months now on R17 powder in hopes that that’ll make the 6.5X47L I have shoot as good as the 6BR at 200.300.400.&/or 500 yard Groundhog Matches. Of course that doesn’t mean somebody can’t have the exact opposite experience.
