6.5X47 LAPUA SHORT BARREL LOADS

Does anyone have a good load for a 6.5x47L in a 16.5 inch barrel?
Any powder recomendations?
Have lots of 130 or 140 bergers.
I use VV550 in my 26 inch barrel but probably need something faster for short barrel.
This will be a carry hunting rifle.

Any help appreciated.

My experience says that going to a faster powder for shorter barrels is not needed.

What works in long tubes, works in short versions, don't over think it.

agree. I use VV550 in a short AR 260 with 130's. Shoots clean so powder burn must be complete.

I use H4350 in both of mine.

Varget is the one to beat in mine. Should work great in a shorter barrel.

Find a node between 37-38gr Varget.

Viht 550 will yield higher velocity. It also will eat the barrel faster than most other powders. I use it in my 6.5x47 Lapua and barrel life is gonna be short. It’s already beginning to copper at 750 rounds.

I worked this out when I was asked to build a particular style of short barrel rifle for an LE agency. The only difference was that we stopped at 19" which worked out to be right for their needs.

In your situation, I built some AR10 platform rifles with 16" barrels using the 6.5 Creedmoor as the cartridge of choice. I found the 140 Class bullets gave the best results especially over a full case of Re-16. Faster powders didn't necessarily perform any better and with some, the performance was less than that of the Re-16. The same with the 130 class bullets.

The nice aspect of the 6.5x47 is that you can run the OAL at 2.800" (magazine length) and still have the seating depth positioned correctly when using the heavier 140 grain bullets. Here I found that Re-17 was the very best combination when I used the 140 grain Elite Hunter at 2.800 inches OAL. It's not a speed demon by any means but it has enough energy to kill deer at reasonable distances.
