6.5x47 Lapua Load info.

Just purchased a Remington 700 in 22.250 that has a shot out barrel and I am going to get it barreled to 6.5X47 Lapua. I intend getting one of out Aussie made Maddco barrels put in it but have not decided on a profile yet. Any Suggestions? I will be shooting to 1000 yards. I think a 1 in 9 twist barrel would be on to use 130-140 grain projectiles. I am also thinking if a choate stock for it unless anyone can suggest something else that is not going to break the bank. I would like any load info that anyone out there has. This would be greatly appreciated.

Shooting is not a matter of life and death it is more important than that.

Aussie, if you go back thru the pages of this forum you will find plenty of load suggestions.

Maybe a 1 in 8 twist would be a better choice for the 130-142gr bullets. Then maybe a 1 in 8.5 for the 120gr or lighter would be ideal. Berger state that their 130gr VLDs require a 1 in 9 or faster barrel. Your idea of using a 1 in 9 twist would be ok but perhaps not ideal!

Thanks Thunder I think I will go for the 1 in 8 twist barrel if I can get it. I see Sierra makes a 142 grain projectile ans as long as there is enough room in the case with the powder and it shoots well I will probably go with it. If not as long as I can get a 130 to shoot well I will go with them. I intend to use ar2208 I think that is one of the best powders for the 6.5 . I am hoping Maddco has 6.5 barrels in stock.

Just remember when you look at the loads on these forum pages that AR2208 is Varget in the USofA. You probably know this already but I just thought I should mention it!

Yes mate I do know that AR2208 is Varget thank you I have a mate who is using 2208 in his 6.5x47 and getting really good results with it. I am just hoping the tax man will be good to me when I get my tax done & I will have my new rifle in the next month or so. Still have to find out if Maddco has a 6.5 barrel in stock. I am also considering a Choate stock for it or possably a Slee depending on price.

If you are going to shoot 130 Bergers, go with the 1:8 twist. Berger recently updated their recommended twist rates on their web site for the 6.5 line.

8.5 twist Krieger with 130 Berger VLDs is giving me groups from .340 to .440 5 shot groups so far using 39.2-40.7 of Big Game. I haven't got very many rounds down it yet but it's at least encouraging.

I've developed a load for 130 JLK in a 8.5 twist krieger 28' lenth in a prone gun. 38.1 RL 15 2930FPS .375 agg. consistently at 300yds resulting in under 1.250 groups and clean F-class targets with mid x counts.

I just received my 6.5 X 47 Lapua from the 'smith. I have been a few weeks trying the 123 Scenars to no avail. I just started, last weekend, with N550 and 130 Berger VLD's, and it seems to be doing 'ok' but not up to expectations. Expectations are 3/4' or less @ 200 yards.. It is performing 'just under to just over' 1' @ 200 yards. I believe it can do considerably better. Does anyone have any really good starting points with the 130's and the N550? Also a powder that is very close to the N550 burn rate is IMR 4007. I was considering trying that too. If anyone has any good info I would appreciate it greatly... Thanks..

will let you know tommorrow I just got mine done and I will be taking it to the range to see what it will do. I am trying 37 gr. of rl-15 and some varget on the 120 smk to see how it will do.will post then .

Hey Snow, believe it or not, in Madisonville Texas we have a Shooting range where you can shoot at night. I visited the place but have never shot there. They say in the summer when the sun scorches the Texas landscape, they have quite a number of shooters there well into the night! I think it's kind of neat! But since it is apparent there is not one where you are, I will just suffer thru tomorrow till the results are posted!

Cant help with N550 but you could use 42.0gr of H4350 for 2930+fps or 38.5gr of Varget for 2980+fps. These loads need working up to and the velocities are from a 30' barrel but they are exceedingly accurate with the Berger 130 VLDs.

Hey Thunder! I certainly appreciate the help. I have tried BOTH RL-15 and H4350 with the 123 Scenars. I could get nowhere near that level of charge in my rifle. I got some 'bolt sticking' with 37.0 grs of RL-15 and at 41.0 grs of H4350 I got pressure signs too. I dropped the charges considerably but accuracy is 'less than stellar'! So I went to the 130 Bergers and N550 to see if I could get better accuracy,i.e. eliminate flyers) and get some velocity without undo pressure>hence the N550. That is why I chose that powder. Additionally, IMR 4007 works very well in my son's 22-250 with 73 gr. Bergers. It is in the same burning rate 'area' as N550 and the 6.5 X 47 case looks just about like a 22-250 AI only with a 264 bullet. If the IMR 4007 works in the 22-250 it may very well work in the 6.5 X 47 too. I am giving it a shot and will see this weekend.. But I do thanl you for your input it is appreciated.

shootdots here you go, I just got back from the range and this is what I got with my new toy, shot 37 grs of varget with lapua brass cci 400 primers and 120 smk seated them .010 into the lands, I shot a 3 shot group .118 and a 6 shot goup .202 @100 yards .I will know more on tuesday when I go to the groundhog shoot, there I can shoot 2-3-400 yds. I cannt wait till i get more ammo loaded

WOW! Snow, that is excellent! I guess I am going to have to really give some thought to the Sierras.. I just started on the Bergers, so I have a few 'outings' to go before I run dry of them. But I can tell you I am going to give your load a real try. I have been seating EVERYTHING 10K into the lands and only once tried to seat them back in all the down, incrementally) to 15K off the lands.. Into the lands was considerably better! I certainly appreciate that info Snow! >>And I look forward to reading about your 'shoot' and the results thereof... Have a great day!
