6.5x47 lapua CFE 223 hangfires

Loaded up 36+gr of cfe223 with a cci450 primer and was getting hangfires w/every shot. Went back to varget and h4350 and no problem. Action is a defiance deviant.

Been fighting these 130 norma golden targets trying to get them to shoot figured I’d try the cfe. Funny, built my dad the same component selection for his rifle and it shoots these 130gr Norma’s great.

Groups actually weren’t bad with the hangfires but it’s a pretty weird experience. Could hear firing pin drop then cartridge would go.

Anyone else tried this powder with similar cartridges? Similar results ? must have been 55degrees so not too cold.

I've never experienced a hang fire. However, I have tried to get the 130 Gr Norma Golden Target bullets to shoot in my 6.5x47L. I tried a bunch of different seating depths from jamb + .009 to -.150. I tried H4350, Varget, IMR 4451, SW Precision Rifle and N150. No go. I never got them to shoot below 1.5 MOA at 100 yards. So, I gave up on them. I still have a couple hundred of them. My understanding (from reading posts here) is that they need a very long free bore or at least longer than .167 in my rifle.

I have the same freebore, CIP spec Reamer.

Only difference in my dads gun is his barrel is 28” medium palma mines 26” heavy palma. But his will shoot sub half moa repeatedly with 36gr varget .020 off the lands. Mine about 1 moa
Both bartlein 8 twist 5r barrels

My barrel was a 26", 8 twist Criterion on a trued Remington action. It shot Berger 120, 130 and 140 Gr bullets great. Using H4350, the 140s shot 1/2 MOA, seated .026 off the lands. The 120 gr Bergers shot 1/4 MOA at .006 off the lands over 39 Gr H4350. This rifle is having a new barrel installed right now. The new one is a 28" Krieger 8 twist.
I have no idea what the new barrel will do. Each one is an individual.

Does that load come close to filling the case?

Every shot fired with a very slight delay. So primer was detonating.

Gotcha, I probably need more coffee! Anyway that sounds like a very light powder charge, what is book max? Low density charge can cause such problems. Friends and I have had a lot of misfires with 450's.

I used to get the occasional hangfire with my 6.5x47 when I first started using Wolf Small Rifle Magnum primers. Originally I was seating them with my old Lee handheld primer but the wolfs were a little oversized and it took a little more umph to get them seated, I switched to the K&M hand primer and never had a hangfire after. Others had similar experiences with the wolfs and the x47.

A quick check using Gordon Reloading Tool indicates your load fills the brass <90%, and you should have about 10K psi available to work up if you go in safe, small steps. I don't know for a fact but have read these ball types of powders don't ignitie as easily as the extruded and the higher load density may help. Be safe!

Had hang fires with ball powder in cold weather, and worse.. click... bullet stuck in the barrel and powder in a clump, loose stuff in the action. Same powder and primer heavy bullet no problem, light bullets a problem...put a heavy crimp on the case really helped the light bullrts 1 in 20 hang fire. as I didn't have the option of going to a large primer or magnum primer, is often recommended to ignite ball powders. Heavier bullet, heavier crimp, and or Magnum primer, solves the problem for me.

We d a few hang fires trying H414 & BLC 2 in the 6.5 x47 using various primers, including magnums . We put it down to poor ball powder ignition in the small primer case never had a hang fire with extruded - tubular powders.

Yes. Tried MR2000 a few years ago in my 6.5x47 and had hang fires so I abandoned it. Have over 8# of the powder sitting on the shelf with nothing to load it in. Never a problem with any extruded powder.

Been so long, that I didn't realize I had an account here.

I have two 6.5x47 barrels screwed onto a couple of FN SPRs. I've heard enough anecdotal evidence that I just stay away from ball powders with that cartridge. Maybe I'm missing out...but stories like these are why I stick with extruded powders.

Regarding the 130gr Norma; my .123 freebore Krieger barrel in 6.5x47L (26", 1:8, M24) shoots them better than anything else. 39.3 - 39.6gr H4350 at 2.100 CBTO (about 2.705 OAL IIRC) gets me in the 1/3 MOA range and occasionally better. It certainly isn't a speed demon, but by the time I'm up to 2750+ Im out of the "node", and the accuracy really starts to come apart.

I like 2000mr, let me know if you want to get rid of it
