6,5x47 Lapua 1-8” or 1-8.5” twist

So, I need to re-barrel my 6.5x47 Lapua. Historically I have always used 1-8” twist barrels at 28” finish length and have had fantastic accuracy with 130 VLD’s, 130 Hybrid OTM, and 140 Hybrid. For this next barrel I have the following bullets I will tune loads for: 130 Hybrid OTM, Lapua Scenar L 136, Lapua Scenar 139, and
SMK 142.

I would go with another 1-8” twist but I can get a 1-8.5” twist right now rather than waiting up to a year on Krieger, Bartlein, etc. to build me a barrel. I know the 8.5” twist will be great for the 130 Bergers and most likely good stability for the Lapua 136 and 139. Do any of you shoot 140 class bullets in a 47 using a 1-8.5” twist?

I live in Mississippi so my environmentals suck as density altitude is terrible here. Not sure the 8.5” will stabilize 140 Hybrids and 142 SMK’s. I’m hoping you guys can tell me you’ve had great results in the 8.5” twist.

Thank you,

Josh

I have an 8T krieger I could sell you, pm sent.

8.5 hummm.....don't know regarding the 142 for sure.

Anyone else? Anyone with any comparable 6.5mm such as Creedmoor, have you successfully used 1-8.5” twist and stabilized the 140 class bullets?

I’ve had both. 30” barrels. I found that the 140 hyb’s really like the 8 tw barrel. I’ve shot them in the 8.5 twist and got random flyers. Problem goes away with the 8 twist.
Now the 8.5 twist always shot the 130’s better than the 8 twist for me….
I shoot mid/long range and this is fclass rifles…

Well, according to the Berger Twist Rate Calculator plugging in the environmental and altitude data that I will be shooting in, the 140 Hybrid appears to have marginal stability out of a 1-8.5” twist. Safe bet would be for me to use another 1-8” twist. I wanted to try the 8.5” twist as I believe it would be better for my primary bullet, the Berger 130 Hybrid OTM. However, I will also shoot 140’s so I have to be properly twisted for the 140’s.

Thank you to all who responded.

My 6.5x47 is a 1/8 tw and it has shot very well with 130 gr Bergers and it never shot the 140 as be well as the 130 for me with H-4350
