6.5x47 L short barrel help

Looking for some help to increase my FPS with a Tikka T3X with a 22" Douglas Barrel using 135 gr Berger Classic Hunters. This new barrel has 100 rounds on it so far from break in and load testing.

Started off with Varget and got to 37.6 gr, 0.020" jump @ 2789 fps with a sticky bolt handle lift and pressure signs in Lapua brass.

Next was 8208 @ 37.8 gr, same 0.020" jump @ 2639 fps, no pressure signs yet. Will load a few more and test.

Also tried 4064 @ 36.0 gr, 0.020" jump @ 2651 fps, no pressure signs yet. Will load a few more and test as well.

Accuracy with all powders has been pretty good at 100 yards, just looking for 2800-2850 fps to help with 1000 yard targets next summer.

Any help on other powders or thoughts on above would be appreciated.

I have a 24” barrel and don’t get much more velocity than you do.
I use Varget also, I was going to try H4350 as I use it in my 22-250AI with good results.
2800fps, or near enough to, is no slouch for 1000yrds. You’ll just have a little more drop.

Cheers.

I would suggest picking a powder and load up a few in 0.5gr increments close to a known load until you find pressure signs. If ran with a chronograph it saves a lot of messing around.
If you can use accurately chamber sized brass to give clearer readings of pressure, all the better.
Also for this, start with bullets say 10 thou off the lands.

Varget is a good powder for the 120- 140 great bullet.
For my 142gr smk in a 26" barrel I was 36.6gr of varget in my suitably throated chamber.
So to start at 35gr of varget going up in 0.5gr to find a maximum powder load may only be 5 rounds and a decision on whether you will achieve the speed you are looking for.

Each powder used a 10 round ladder test with once fired brass, the shoulder bumped back and neck sized, 0.2 gr increments between charges, and a Magnospeed chrony. With a shorter 22" barrel and 135 Classic Hunters, not sure if there is a more effective powder than I listed? Not sure if a slower powder is needed for the 135 gr Classic Hunters, but too slow for the 22" barrel will not efficiently get a good burn before existing the barrel?

I settled on Power Pro 2000MR as it provides higher velocity prior to pressure issues vs other powders I tried. Best accuracy too. While reputed as having high temperature sensitivity, I have not experienced this. To qualify I am shooting long range steel, and may not observe as sensitive as paper target shooters. Once I worked up a hot load when cool which blew primers during extreme summer heat, and also experienced with Varget.

I don’t have a short barrel I shoot a 26”, but to get max velocity I shoot 40 grn of RL17 on a CCI 450 on a Berger 140 elite hunter. I am also shooting a new barrel. And at cooler temperatures which slows your bullet, I am at 2775, where with my old barrel I was at 2860. I have also tried Varget H4350 Vitta Vori and 4831SC , and got the best velocity out of the RL17.

According to Quickload calculations...

Powders that produce top velocities in a 30"bbl 6.5x47L are the same exact powders that produce top velocities in a 22" barrel, And same things goes for a 16" barrel.

Powder selection for short barrels will influence muzzle blast and flash, but not velocities.

Here is the Quickload comparison between 16" and 30" barrels using 139gr Lapua Scenar's. 2.800"coal. From top to bottom = most velocity to least by powder at 62,000 psi and/or a max case fill of 107%.

A short barrel does not need a faster powder, and a 22” barrel is not short by any length of the imagination.
I use 24”, 26”, 28” and 30” barrels in F-Class comp. The reason isn’t due to barrel length, but rather weight constraints. My barrels are HEAVY. In this regard, I have to either run a shorter barrel, or use a thinner one. The thickness side of things I prefer not to change, have in the past to gain some weight loss, but tuning was sporadic.

Cheers.

Trev,

One thing to consider is that most barrels will gain speed as they break in during the first 200 or so rounds. Hopefully your barrel will do the same thing and get you where you want to be. Just a thought.:D:D

According to Quickload calculations...

Powders that produce top velocities in a 30"bbl 6.5x47L are the same exact powders that produce top velocities in a 22" barrel, And same things goes for a 16" barrel.

Powder selection for short barrels will influence muzzle blast and flash, but not velocities.

.............. and it is apparently so in real life. The 6.5X47L has been a phenomenal success in the UK in the multi-purpose role - range, foxes, varmints, deer. One reason is that ultra short barrels and sound moderators ('suppressors' in US terminology) have been the norm for our sporting shooters for many years and this cartridge has been shown many times to deliver excellent MVs and precision from barrels as short as 14-inches.

I'm still waiting to get my 6.5x47 back from the gunsmith. Its has a 20 inch barrel and is threaded for a suppressor. Looking forward to working up a load with either the 123 or 129 Hornady SST and Varget. I currently hunt with a 16.25 inch 6.5 Creedmoor using 123 SST and Varget. It works just fine and have taken 2 deer with it so far this year. Will be hunting in Alabama this weekend. Love the short barrelled rifles.

I mostly use RL17, 40 grns on 140grn elite hunter from Berger, this weekend I tested the same load on 139 grn Lapua Scenar bullets, from .005- .020 jump and got velocities at 2850- 2900 averaging about 2860fps from a new Brux 4R 26" barrel with a spiral muzzle break. I know my barrel is 4" longer, but the RL17 gives me better velocity and accuracy than most.

I agree on a previous post that the barrel may speed up after another 50-100 rounds. My 26" Broughton on my 6.5x47 gained nearly 100 fps at 200 rounds. It is now at 2950 fps with a 130 Berger and H4350.
