6.5x47 in ar-15

Can this be done? Or could you do this with a 6mmx47? What is the difference between the 6.5 grendel and the 6.5x47? I am really new to the calibers so you will have to for give me. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks John

The 6.5x47 Lapua has the same .473" casehead dia. as the 308 Win. While there are some guys stuffing .473" dia. cases (eg - 6BR) into AR15s, the AR10 platform would be the way to go with the 6-6.5x47 Lapua.

unfortunately the 6.5x47 is just a bit too long to fit in an AR15 magazine. The 6.5x47 max case length is about 1.850", whereas the grendel is about 1.515". Additionally, the 6.5x47 has a water capacity of about 48 grains to the 6.5 grendel's 36 grains. It should be pretty obvious that the 6.5x47 is in an entirely larger class than the 6.5 grendel. You could make a single-shot only upper like offered http://www.bratrifles.com/, but a single-shot AR15 seems frivolous (at least to me). 6.5x47L as well as 6XC occupies an undesirable size range in terms of gas guns. They are too long to fit in an AR15, but are dwarfed by the .308 length cartridges (.243, .260, 6.5 creedmoor, etc), that can be fired out of an AR10 (or variant).

I'm one of those guys with more time than brains, and just built a 6BRX AR-15. I'd recommend the AR Performance bolt and barrel extension, as they are beefed up...the only other option out there as far as I know is the Olympic Arms, which is what BRAT is using (BR Armament Technologies). It took some time to shoot in, but barrel/extension combo is working great. Initial problems with feeding and reliable extraction, but after a hundred or so rounds, it seems to have worked itself out. I'm using C Products magazines, as the usual AR-15 mags won't work. While I was having those initial problems, I started a thread (just search for 6BRX AR) to search for answers...some good info in there from Whitley, the 6mmAR guy.

If you want to use a 6.5x47, 6-6.5x47, or 6XC,,, you need to use the AR-10 platform, not the AR-15. Going to the AR-10 sized platform, the simple path is just look at the DPMS LR rifles which are available in 243 Winchester, 260 Remington or 6.5 Creedmoor.

Given the cost of 6.5x47L brass, going with either the 243 Winchester or 260 Remington will save you a ton of money when it comes to buying brass to load and you wont feel as bad when ding up or loose cases in a semi-auto.

As far as the "Grendel", it has the same case head diameter and case length as the 7.62x39. It was designed for the AR-15 platform, but cannot offer the performance that 260 Remington can in a AR-10 sized platform.

I have 2 AR12s in 6.5x47 -same DPMS 308 lower but lighter upper so you can put the weight in the barrel where it should be.

I am in early load development on both the 6.5 and 6x47 and running a full blown machine shop doesn't allow much time but the first day out of 6 loads tested with the 6.5 -2 were 1/2Moa . After comparing drift and the vel I can get with 107s I believe they will shoot better out of a 22" AR. If I can get the 6x47 to .3 like the 6BRX shoots then I'll probably start shooting the 6x47 if not I'm sticking with the BRX.
