6.5X47 for F-O

For those of you shooting the 6.5X47 Lapua for F-O can you give me an idea what your barrel life has been with the average velocity and powder your using. Doing a little research for the future.

Thanks for your help.

Ha! No not this time Nate. Actually I have a couple of take off 6.5X284 barrels that where still shooting well at 1000 but it was the end of season so I spun them off and put on the new one. One has a nice long shank on it yet so I might be able to cut it off and still have to chamber up a X47. So with a bunch of 142's and a barrel or two to play with it might be a worthy search for me. Im also curious to see what the average barrel lasts in this cartridge.
After the first ten National Records it kinda looses its appeal. ;D Ha!

I have shot out 2 6.5 x 47's.... The first one had over 2K rounds thru it and I turned it into my "stand gun" for hunting. It still shoot well. My last one only had 1800 rounds thru it>>>it went because the last 1000+ rounds were shot with N550.... N550 eroded my throat VERY quickly. I now have a new barrel on and I am in the process of load development now>>>using H4350.. I expect 2500 or so accurate rounds..

Sounds like its very similar to the 260 in reguards to barrel wear? Yes that N550 is some HOT stuff!! Thank you for the reply.

Any one else?

I asked that very question of a British shooter who was posting about the cartridge on the UKVarminting.co.uk forum. Here's the reply I got:

Hi Laurie
I'm up to approx 2600 rounds. Some of which (1000) were quite juicy loads. Accuracy is still around 0.3 MOA out to 800 yards with the 123g Amax. I can't shoot the 140g Amax through this barrel with the same accuracy that I can achieve with the 123's. measuring the twist rate my barrel is 1:8.5 - not the suggested 1:8. This could be the reason.

I generally get 2800-3000 with 140 class bullets and H-4350, but I dont think I push them as hard as some others I have seen here. I run them around 2810fps. Load is usually 40.4-40.6gr depending on barrel and powder lot.

Hey Russ....

Here ya go, all my secrets that have proven themselves at Memphis and Tullahoma.

I've been shooting the 6.5x47 at the rate of about one barrel a year since it came out. All barrels have been 30" 8 and 8 1/2 twist Krieger 4 grooves chambered with .125 freebore by Greg Tannel...his reamer.

I use nothing but moly coated Berger 130 VLDs seated .012 into the lands, with ~ 38.5 grains Varget to yield 2950 fps. Wolf primers.

Mine have maintained sub 1/4 moa up to about 2700 rounds. I made a mistake and gave one with about 2000 rounds to a buddy who re-chambered it to 260 Rem. After 3 years it is still shooting the 1-1/2" spotter a lot at 600.

Thanks Frank. And all!!!

First off I hope your having speedy recovery. Thanks for all the info, I forgot that you have been campaigning this round for so long. Guess its been some time since we have seen each other for that matter.
Other than ShootDots one barrel looks like the mass of you are gitting 2500+ of barrel life with the heavy bullets. Anyone try the 142's... The reason I ask is that I have a bunch that need to go down range some time.
So far I have seen. N550, Varget,H4350, for the powders of choice. Kinda suprised at the Varget actually.

Thanks again to all that replied and helped out.

Russ.....

Yes, it has been too long. I have missed some important matches the past 2 years.

The 142's will shoot OK out of the 6.5x47 if you're going to be shooting for funzies, but the speed will not be there (safely).

The Berger 130 VLD has much better BC than the 142 and will run neck to neck with a 142 out of a souped-up 6.5-284 out to 1000y.
